Sapphire for new and acrylic for old.

If you are looking to buy and are wondering, then be sure you ask the seller upfront.

Old, acrylic (= Plexiglas = plastic). New sapphire. Never a crystal case back, those are straight fakes (some owners mod real ones with a crystal back, but that's rather unusual).
Which ones are better? Many of us love plastic for the looks on old models. I personally tend to dislike sapphire as fragile. Have some nicks on my SDs. |

Here you asked and were answered about acrylic crystal: " 23 January 2008, 06:42 PM #16 atldavek "TRF" Member atldavek's Avatar Join Date: Nov 2007 Real Name: Dave Location: Michigan Watch: SS SUB Posts: 309 The crystal is the clear part above the linen DIAL, the part with the hour markers and lettering. Linen is the particular finish of your dial. Stay around a while, this is a great place to learn all about these watches. atldavek is offline Report Post Old 23 January 2008, 06:39 PM #15 nismohks "TRF" Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: UK Posts: 11 thanks for the info time. and to the others, though i dont quite get some of the comments. I just finished work so im a bit slow at the moment. roadcarver, when you say does it have acrylic crystal do you mean the screen (not sure what the proper term is) with the bubble for the date ? Well it does feel plasticky so could be acrylic crystal. And what is this linen dial you guys are on about ? im pretty sure its stainless steel or metal of somesort. thanks nismohks" |

I truly do not see where this is heading to but will answer your question, yes acrylic scratches easier than sapphire and thats why watch manufacturers started using them instead some time in the 80s.

Because Crystal is shorter than 'the clear thingy on top of your watch that protects it and allows you to see the time'?
