Visions of watches spinning in my head!

For a long time, I was fairly satisfied with the state of my collection. I essentially declared victory. Since the Fall, however, I've had a lot of restlessness and indecision about my watches. I suspect several of you will find this situation familiar. I think I've had a severe case of timepiece vertigo since late summer! Symptoms?

I went with silver dial for my new DJ II, and it looks great (I think), but it is difficult for me to see the dial clearly in some lighting...but not in sunlight.(see below) I might switch to the black dial, which ran a close second when I bought the watch; but the jury is still out! I'm thinking of putting the white dial with Romans back on my DD II for this year. I'm looking for a new strap for my Daytona 116518. I gave up my GMT IIC and my strongly-desired 42 mm Explorer II (great watches, but I was restless). I've even thought of switching the black dial with gold subdials on my Daytona 116528 for a white dial; or maybe the reverse champagne dial with black subdials. I've come very close to buying a used 40 mm Polar Explorer II. I toyed with buying a Cartier Calibre instead of the DJ II. I've found myself hanging out more and more at the Patek display case in more than one store. I went through a two-day infatuation with a faded bezel Pepsi GMT. I sold the Explorer II to buy a Sub C, but changed my mind. I lusted after the no-date Sub for one afternoon, but choked at the point of purchase. I bought the DJ II and love it; except that when I wear contacts to correct for distance, I can't read the silver dial easily in normal interior light. I would have gone with the new 39 mm Explorer except the blacked out Arabic numerals challenge my eyes, too. Maybe it's time to sell most of my Rolex watches and get that Patek I've had in the back of my mind for years! Or maybe I just haven't found the perfect mix of Rolex watches, but am close. Or maybe I should just wear my glasses with progressive lens or get Lasik surgery. I've been through this before to some degree, but this severe timepiece vertigo attack is bothersome! But...it is a nice problem to have!

Otto, I never expected such uncertainty from you! You were my wise sage who steered me towards my beautiful DDII with the perfect dial combination after your experiences with both white and champagne Romans. I recall you telling me how photogenic White was, while the Champagne dazzled you so much in person. Though, the wonderful thing about these pieces is you can change them as you desire for a fresh new take on an old (relatively speaking) reference.
Secondly, have you considered a dark Mother of Pearl dial for you Daytona - I think that would be phenomenal. Or perhaps white, which would provide an excellent contrast to the YG.
Finally, Patek does absolutely nothing for me, but if that's what you want in your heart of hearts, then make it happen!

Otto, thanks for sharing. You should know by now that there can be no victory in this "hobby." The DJII is gorgeous, but if it's too hard to read in certain condition a change is in order there. As the old saying goes, there are a plenty of fish in the ocean (applies to watches too)!

Thanks for reminding me! As for the dark MOP, it is beautiful, but for me at least, very hard to read.

I definitely know the feeling all too well.

I found it a bit difficult to understand what is in your collection as of today. That said, however, I believe you have two Daytonas (yellow gold leather band, yellow gold) and a Day-Date II.

Regarding the Day-Date II, I agree with your thoughts on the silver dial. The white-faced Day-Date II is a gorgeous timepiece, in my opinion. Personally, I think that you should trade your silver dialed model for the white dialed model.

Regarding the Patek, they are stunning timepieces. My suggestion would be to sell the yellow gold leather band Daytona (as you have another Daytona) and start saving for the Patek. I wouldn't suggest selling both the leather band Daytona and the Day-Date II for the Patek. Your Day-Date II is stunning and it's a keeper. Just swap it for a white-faced model. Just my two cents.

By the by, what Patek timepiece are you eyeing?

This feels like a Rolex group therapy session! Believe me, I can relate to the disquieting feeling. Your watches are spectacular but I can understand wanting a change. As much as I love my YG DDII, sometimes I think of trading it for "something..." though it clearly remains my major grail. Of course if you want a PP go for it, though personally I agree with Just A Breath that Pateks do nothing for me.

Agreed. I think you'd regret it after. I'd just keep adding to your already beautiful collection. Collecting timepieces can become quite gluttonous.

That is one I have considered, though the truth is my desire for it has died down. My favorite Pateks are just too far out there in terms of price.

Of course, the simple Calatrava is one I like a lot and might be within range as an add on to my collection later. That might do it for me.

You have certainly been a "wandering WIS" of late. So many comings and goings. Farewell to the GMTIIC and the Expy II 42"...and pondering about Pateks.

How are you doing with reading the time on your White Dial Daytona? If I recall you had a spare black dial when we met up in Tokyo.

I think your black dial Gold Daytona is stunning and should stay in the permanent collection...Just my opinion.
