Leary about buying on Ebay??Your opinion??
Hey all, I have been on and off this site for a while reading up and enjoying everyone's opinions and information....I'm interested in buying my wife a Rolex for Christmas and needed your opinion on buying one from Ebay. There is a seller with a 99.9% rating who has sold over 700 Rolex watches over the years and seems to have great prices on new watches. I'm interested in buying my wife a 18K/TT Lady Datejust with black MOP/diamond dial with gold fluted bezel. I've been to my local AD and they can have the watch in late January and the best price they said they can do is $9400.00 out the door. The list on it is $9775.00. This particular Ebay seller whose name is u$aveontime, is offering it for $7855.00 shipped. I've had several contacts with him and he assures me the watch is brand new, never been sold, and has open papers. I hate to buy something offline, but for almost $1800 difference it's hard not too! What would you guys/girls do?
Hope to hear back from you all! Thanks |

Didn't bother to read once I saw e-bay.
Not worth the saving my friend. Buy the person in person, rot the rating. f |

IMHO Most "trusted" grey market sellers will give you a great price straight off!!!, but with a little groundwork and negiotiating in my experience everytime there WILL be an AD who will come in pretty damn close indeed match it
good luck steve

My experiance is that AD's no matter how hard I worked them or begged them wouldn't get close to gray market prices, moreover there is no sales tax with a gray. It's takes some ground work and some investigation but if you're willing to put in a few days than you can make a real savings oriented purchase. I'll PM you some info I have

If it helps at all, I've heard good things about that seller. I have not had any personal experience with him just so you know. Check out watchnet.com under the 'good guys' section. Great for references. Good luck! Sounds like a beautiful watch.

That seller is as rock solid as eBay has.

I would say read the feeback comments of other people that purchase a Rolex from the seller and look at the pictures. If you are new to Rolex and do not have much experience then look at the pics of various watches on this forum for hours on end and jot down details about the dial case and band. Next, go to Pawn shops selling high end watches to learn and know how heavy a Rolex is and then over time you will look at ebay as a great place to shop.

I would not touch it with a 10 foot pole. No matter the savings, it is not worth it. Not saying that this Ebay seller is not legit. But, if someone on Ebay can offer that type of discount on that model Rolex, you should be able to find a grey dealer to match the price and be able to buy in person. If you can't, then I would question how this Ebay seller is able to sell at that price. Always buy a Rolex in person. Good luck and let us know what you decide. |

Why would that be? These all came from eBay, and all have been authenticated. I got some pretty good deals and the sellers made a reasonable profit.

The fact is, if you know what you're doing and you're smart about it, eBay is a great place to buy a watch. But for the rest of us, it's a complete crapshoot. As Dirty Harry once said, "A good man knows his limitations." I certainly know mine and that's why I would never buy anything that cost more than $20 via eBay.
