Happy Australia Day!

Here's a fact, that I was hitherto oblivious to:
On 13 May 1787 a fleet of 11 ships, which came to be known as the First Fleet, was sent by the British Admiralty from England to Australia. Under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip, the fleet sought to establish a penal colony at Botany Bay on the coast of New South Wales, which had been explored and claimed by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770. The settlement was seen as necessary because of the loss of the Thirteen colonies in North America.

Thanks for the good wishes.
The traditional Australia Day celebrations (scheduled for Saturday) were washed out in Northern Queensland by torrential rain and gale-force winds.
In Capricornia (halfway up the Queensland coast) we received 500mm of rain in 24 hours which isolated and flooded the city and shut down water and power for 12 hours.
My suburb (being on the base of the mountains) took a hammering from run-off from the many creeks that run down through the suburbs.
Here is a photo of the street at the bottom of mine after the water subsided.

That's a lot of damage... Hope it will be fixed soon and that nobody got injured or worse.
