year rolex started to procuce tt sub in 18k and stainless

When did Rolex end production of the 14k and stainless submariner and start making it in 18k and stainless? The flip clasp was all stainless in the 14k version up to the late 1980's. Am I correct in thinking that when they changed to 18k they put the gold down the middle of the clasp? Did they make the buckles with 14k? I used to sell them in the 1980's and early 1990's and do not recall 14k on the buckles, just 18k.
