Incoming! An incredible gesture from one of our great members...

Greetings TRF,

A few weeks ago I was exchanging a few private messages with one of our members on this forum. To spare you details, he made me an offer I simply could not refuse...

I cannot thank this member enough for his generosity and I trust you will understand why. Below are two hints that should help you guessing who he is and what he did (although the thread title itself is a pretty good giveaway...).

Look at that box, would you dare telling me you can't guess the answer?

Papers!

Smaller box (which seems to be very tough, I didn't know Hamilton packed their timepieces that well) is now opened, the last step before showing you what I got!

I hope my pictures can do justice to this beautiful timepiece Mark! Here's to your generosity!

P.S.: If I put it in the freezer tonight will the markers come out red tomorrow morning?

It looks great on you!Glad you like it mate and I hope you can get it fixed and wear it for many years!

The story is that I got this watch in the days before I had a Rolex when my old TAG was away for repair. I REALLY liked it but found the leather strap didn't suit my lifestyle on a watch I wanted to wear 24/7.
Anyhooo... I went back to my tag and then onto my Rolex but occasionally put the Hamilton on since I felt sorry for it.
A while back I'd been wearing it and went to take it off before I got into the bath (something I don't do with bracelet watches) I fumbled the buckle and it fell on the stone floor! It still ran but there was a grinding noise from the rotor.
The quote to fix it was about the same as to replace it so I told the watchmaker not to bother and put it in a drawer.
That bugged me since it was a waste of a good watch so I had the brainwave to sent it to Carl as a gift in the hope that he could fix it and enjoy it but, if not, at least he could practice on it.
To his great credit Carl at first wanted to decline my offer of a "gift watch" but I convinced him it was no good to me, it deserved a chance at a second life and he deserved to have it!

So good luck, Canuck!

Thank you for the details Scottie! I will let you know how it goes as soon as I start working on it!

For the record, the watch still works and you don't always hear a noise when the rotor moves but clearly there has to be something in it that needs to be worked on because you can hear a grinding noise at times. Besides, if it's just a very small job I'll take the time to service it as well, it will be a good way to practice working on automatic watches.

A much appreciated gesture from a great member indeed (gesture for which I thanked him quite a few times but here it goes again: thank you very much Mark! )! Mark and I have been friends since my very first days on TRF and I value our friendship as well as the little jokes we keep writing about each other in various threads on this forum.

When I opened the box I must admit I was stunned by this watch's beauty! Mark's pictures in our private messages gave me the illusion that it was a vintage watch but it seems like it's rather a retro looking one, needless to say they succeeded in making the watch look like an old one!

The dark brown band looks and feels very tough, I love its color!

Now here's the tricky part! When Mark offered me this timepiece he gave me a little challenge: fix it! Indeed, the rotor makes a strange noise when it moves, I'll have to take a look at it when I'll be in the appropriate class!

And the last pictures, classic wrist shots!

At 40mm the watch is clearly a good size! I am used to much smaller timepieces but nonetheless I think I can still pull it off.

Overall, the watch feels very good on the wrist, you have the feeling you wear a watch that can be worn for a lot of activities. It's tough and screams reliability! So far I've worn it for a few hours but I really like how it sits on my wrist.

Oh, I forgot to say...

Yes, the markers turn red if you put it in the freezer for long enough... But only the lume!
To see it you have to get in the freezer too so that the light doesn't come on!

Wonderful gesture Mark.

Congrats Carl. Looking forward to the diagnosis/fix when you get to the proper class.

I just read that, hilarious my friend!

My freezer has too much food in it for me to fit in...bloody habit of having to eat three meals everyday!

Git 'er done!!!

I really hope you get it all fixed up. I think it would be kind of cool if one of the first watches you get to fix is yours!

Phew....so glad it was a watch in that box Carl. With the initial photo in your post, a scene from The Godfather movie came to mind

Seriously, some great people on this forum...let us know how the repairs go.

Thank you Paulie, not to repeat myself but it does feel like it when I'm wearing it (in fact, guess what I'm wearing today? ).

And I agree with you guys, a lot of wonderful people around here!
