Funny Story

I was in Phil. PA on business this weekend so I stopped in at KOP Mall to hit Omega and Tourneau. While in Tourneau talking to one of the sales associates (who was very nice btw) a man came in with a problem.

He could not understand why his "automatic" watch stopped working if he took it off on Friday and did not wear it till Monday. He was under the impression that it automatically wound itself. It would seem he believed that it wound itself whether he wore it or not. From half way down the counter it looked like it may have been a Blancpain or IWC I really did not get a clear shot of it.

I think I will never understand people who spend thousands of dollars on an item and have no clue what so ever as to how it really works. Kind of made me giggle and sad all at the same time.

One thing I've learned from studying watchmaking is that you learn something new everyday, perhaps he first bought this watch because he really liked it and he's looking forward to learning much more about movements and horology whilst developping a passion for them.

...Although I must admit it is a pretty funny story!

It’s amazing how little people know about how most things work.
GPS, Wi-Fi, internal combustion engines, basic thermodynamics etc.

I admit that I learned about my GMT by reading the manual after I was already in possession of it. (gift from my bride)
Maybe he hadn't read the manual.

Somewhere deep down I think they would be better off with a quartz. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;)

I can completely relate to what you witnessed.

I have a friend who considers himself "into" watches and is even considering the purchase of a Patek perpetual calendar watch.

Just recently when I pointed out that his current automatic watch would stop running in a few days at most if he didn't wear it or wind it, he looked at me incredulously and wouldn't believe me!

What's so funny about this?

I just spent $5,000 on my ECU and still don't understand it.

Upon writing ECU in Google I came across this picture. Mon, if your car looks like this I'd strongly recommend you to gently move away from your machine and read the instructions booklet before considering plugging another wire in your engine...

Your ECU makes your car go but an expensive watch does not make your day go...only your money.

If you install it the traditional way, you'll find that it does.

Idk what makes my car go, obviously the power comes from the engine, although my engine wouldn't work without gas, but then the power goes to the transmission, and then from there to the rear differential, then from the differential to my wheels, but my engine wouldn't work without the ECU, and my ECU wouldn't work without a battery, and my battery would die quickly without the alternator. and if it wasn't sitting on tires it wouldn't move anyways.

So what really does make your car go?

Sorry I mis spoke. I should have said the ECU HELPS your car go. Did not mean to spark a deep debate as to what came first the chicken or the egg. ;)

It might have been a gift so maybe he didnt spend the cash, otherwise that is just insane or hes a multi-millionaire and not knowing how his expensive watch works is a statement.
