Inspired by Rolex.
Maybe a bit misleading title but......I have surely been inspired.
I have always been a worker bee. For me, as I have no family besides my folks and whatnot, work has always come first. Always..... That said, I recently ordered something, that for me, is pretty much off the charts in the world of ridiculous. While I am a bit of a saver (and spender too) and I have the loot set aside for this, I always get a bit nervous when making such a large, and pretty frivolous purchase. Anyway, I have been absolutely busting my ass lately. I like my life. I like my lifestyle. I enjoy this hobby and some others. While it is all materialistic stuff, and I have quite a fulfilled spiritual life, I enjoy the fact that I am able make this frivolous purchase. What I am trying to say though is that I have always been an inspired guy. BUT I find myself even more so lately. I am busting my ass, waiting for my new treat to arrive. And I am very very excited. Next time, I am going yellow. But so very inspired to make sure there is a next time. Just sharing. Have a good day.

I'm also at a similar point in my life. Sometimes, there's nothing wrong with going over the top, as long as the rest of your life is balanced and in order.

I can truly relate to what you are saying. I, like I'm sure a lot of other folks on this forum, have also worked very hard for as long as I can remember. It's nice to hear someone who is upbeat and positive about their life, proud of their accomplishments and also still recognizes that all you have in life didn't appear on its own; you worked for it. It sounds like you value your family, too, so, you understand that material things aren't going to complete your life. You really seem to have your priorities straight.
I think I can relate so much to what you are saying because I put my work first, too; perhaps to the detriment of committing to someone special as I am not married nor do I have children. I always told myself that I wanted to be established and in good shape financially before I dove into marriage and family. From what I hear, you really never feel like you are fully prepared for all the responsibilities that family life demands, but, you make it work. Anyway, I also have a life that I enjoy and a wonderful family that makes it all the better. I don't have a Rolex now, but, some time ago, in my early 30's, after I finally paid off all of my student loans, I decided to treat myself to a submariner date model. I was living in the city at the time and had an old car, that I hardly used, so, instead of putting a deposit on a new car, I bought the sub. I have to say, that it was scary at first buying a watch that cost thousands when I was only used to wearing digitals, and broke almost all of them! That watch actually taught me a valuable lesson in buying quality and also the value of owning something built to last. One of the members on here once posted about buying quality at a higher price and crying once, or buying lesser made items multiple times and crying again and again. After buying that Rolex, I found myself looking to purchase other high quality items that were more than just passing fads or disposable, such as Alden shoes. Although the Alden shoes cost more upfront, they can be resoled and over 10 years, they've actually cost less than buying new, cheaper shoes every few years. I won't say that the sub I had was an investment, but, when I sold it to a friend a few years back, I actually ended up getting my money back on it. You can't say that about a lot of other high end goods, and, I'm sure for any car I would have used that money for back then certainly wouldn't have held its value. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for your thoughtful posting. As I look to get a new sub, it is nice to hear from other folks who can express the fact that making such a large purchase can be a bit daunting for a lot of us. I know the material item of a new Rolex in itself won't bring you happiness, but, I hope that every time you look at it, it reminds you of the life you built on hard work and it allows you to appreciate the life you have. Congratulations! |

Nice and thoughtful post. I subscribed basically to the same philosophy. Work Hard and Play Hard too. And there is no such things as a "frivolous" purchase. What value things mean for us are are what we subscribe to them.
