Say the AD calls and says they have the ever elusive SS Daytona, and it's yours for the taking. You buy it. Then what ??

Wear it ?
Flip it ?
Just put it away ??

What would you all do with one ?

well interesting you should ask... i have 2 on order with my AD... I have NO intention to flip it... and why get something that nice and not wear it? :)

I just got mine two days ago after first mentioning it to my AD a few weeks ago. It is a M series white dial. It really is a beautiful thing to see. I turned 64 a couple weeks ago. I'm going to wear this baby. Not wasting time saving it for someone else to enjoy!

Not a trick question at all. Think about it. You get a watch for 7900 bucks. It's worth much more. If you wear it, it's worth less. If you don't, it seems like a waste. Just a tough call.

Since I am not in the watch business, the fact that I might be able to sell a watch for a bit more than I paid for it is not sufficient impetus to keep me from wearing it. I'm not making my living buying and selling watches. I don't buy them for investment purposes. For me, any watch I buy, I buy to wear. I can sell most of my watches for more than I paid, but that doesn't mean I'm going to sell any of them (I'm not).

I guess in the end it depends on what you want to get out of the watch. Is it a flipper or a keeper? That's for you to decide. And once you decide what you want to do with it, then you treat it accordingly.

you buy anything, you use it, it's worth less. so how is this any different than anything else you consume? only difference is, with the Daytona, you can still come ahead even after it's worth less later on..it will always be worth more than you paid. so yes, i use mine every day, why keep it brand new for someone else? and the $2k that i could make will not change my lifestyle, if it does change my lifestyle, then i shouldnt be buying a rolex in the first place.

my 2 cents.

It's a decision I won't have to wrestle with. While I was at my AD a couple of weeks ago to collect a vintage Rolex that had been to the RSC for an overhaul, it was mentioned that they had a SS Daytona in stock. I tried it on for the heck of it, and it did exactly what the last one did that I tried on there. Nothing. Doesn't do anything for me. The only reason I'd buy one would be for financial gain.

Thats an easy one for me

, rotate it with my other watches. When I get my SMP back from service, I'm goning to try and alternate it every other day with my dweller. I'm already looking to buy a LV ,then add that one in the rotation. I love the bezels on all of these watches. Black,
blue then green, then the SS Yachtmaster.......... and then.............

I have been travel over 90% of the time on my job. So, when I was decide to buy my first ROLEX over nine year ago. I chose GMT. Daytona is my dream watch. I just want to have it. But, my GMT is my favorite watch to wear everyday. Right now, I decided to keep Daytona for my only son when he grown-up. He will be only four next week. So, I still have along time to change my mine of weather going to give it to him as used or brand new watch. I am on another waiting list from AD for another one and also looking for 2000 model and older. Which ever come first. That, I will definitely wear it.

I first wnated it for the pure hunger of owning something that 'is' hard to get.

Then as time wore on (no punn intended) i preferred the date models, so i wear my tt blue more.

However lately, i really enjoy the ss black dial on the daytona. I was tempted to sell it as the market is great for this watch, used in Melbourne i was quoted $16,000.00 AUST Dollars.

But i will say one thing, it does spark interest. See most stores will carry your garden variety day dates, AKs, subs etc and if you wear one and come in , its not biggie. However, the ss daytona does "imply" that you were on a List or connected or secured one by some means.

Heck even the lady at RSC Melbourne commented that i must have waited a while to get my ss daytona when she saw it. I had gone in on the great advice of Lol-x for a free link adjustment while you wait service.

I really enjoy wearing it now.

And if you have the Keet Urlich book you will notice that ss daytonas keep going up on value and maintain an air of collectibility. Even "if" they introduce a 42mm black bezel etc version, this will just increase the demand and also increase the value of the current ones imho.

Mine sat for at least a year in the box. I loved the idea that I secured one. Life was not great, but not bad and I really didn't feel there was an occasion or accomplishment worthy of my finally taking it out of the box. I loved opening the box once in a while to look at it with all its stickers and everything, that new Rolex smell was great.

Finally I realized the fact that I was not in a hospital and my kids were in good health was reason enough to be thankful.

But as a creature of habit, I tend to buy things and want to preserve them as new. I do not enjoy the use as much as the pleasure of securing whatever it is I wanted to get. The reasoning in my mind is along these lines...Now I have it, its safe, its new, I will wear it when I feel I have earned it. Just because I can buy something, does not mean I deserve it yet. I have no idea what the root of this mode of reasoning spawns from, but I am always happy having something in its original box, in its complete, like new packaging which I open when I use it.

I should not admit this, but I even keep my aftershave cologne in its original box, I open it, take the bottle out, use it, wipe it clean, put it back in the package and set it back in its place as though its an item on display. I love the ritual of the whole thing, and I do the same with my watches...hang tags and all.

So...are there any good psychotherapists here that can help me out? :)

Everyday I had them, they looked at me and said "flip me! flip me!"....in the end, I just couldn't resist their pleas anymore.
