date vs no date sub?

Hi guys,

17 post and counting. Newbie, learning alot, more than mildy addicted and I never even expected to be here at all, but it was a friends passion and here I am.

Anyway, I am wondering about the opinions of the date vs non date model Sub. Having worn the simple victrinox watch for the past 25 years every day, which I am extremely fond of (it has a date, which I have never looked at once) I am now thinking about a rolex due to an upcoming milestone birthday.

Anyway, the version without date to me somehow looks naked or unfinished. Someone at an AD told me many owners grouse about the magnifier on the date and prefer the no date? Is there a strong positive sentiment for the no date version out there? it is alot cheaper and cleaner looking.

In the end it will be what I like better but I am very curious how rolex lovers feel

It'll be personal presence and requirements. ie: do you need to know the date as well as time?

The crystal, if available, can be replaced without the Cyclops and if it's an older model than you don't have to worry about AR should you do a DIY Cyclops removal. Newer models 2010+, pic C/P from Minus4Plus6:


I have two... one D and one ND and I'm fine with or with out.

My eye's are ageing in regards to reading glasses and the Cyclops really helps seeing the date.

Sounds like you don't use the date feature.

No Date Sub 114060 For me, I love mine. nice & clean look

Some prefer it and some do not.

For me the cyclops = Rolex, so this was my first choice.

However Daytona = no date, and I got one of these.

Get the one you like, and don't look back or worry what anyone else thinks.

I too am a "newby" here, at least in post counts, however I've been researching my Rolex purchase on TRF for many months.
I chose the "no date" as it's in my opinion at least, the closest to the original old school Submariner from the 60's.
I love the "old school-vintage" look. The vintage ad below has my new 14060M laid on it next to the 1967 model.
Without having a time machine to go back to 1967 I couldn't get any closer than the model I chose for my first Rolex.
Many like the "no cluttered" look of the no date model be it a vintage or one of the newer 14060 or 114060 styles.
Whatever floats your boat I guess.
Date or no date you can't go wrong. From all the months of reading here I can tell you that both models have their fans.
If you never use the date function on your watch now I guess you're open to either style. Whatever you choose keep us

I got the ad off ebay but I'm not sure what magazine it's from. If you do an ebay search for vintage rolex ad you come up with 3 to 4 pages of them. They are fairy inexpensive, that one I got was in pristine condition (I'm going to frame it someday) for less than $10.00

Clean lines of the Sub. If you want that look with a date an older SD fills the bill.

I like the sub nd myself, but I wouldn't mind having the date sub either.. both are fine models and the date/cyclops is a defining feature of Rolex. I liked the cleaner lines of the sub nd slightly over the date. Someday if I get a second Rolex it will definitely have a date/cyclops.

Either is great, of course, but I've never understood why the date is so necessary. I've said it before, why not just use your bezel for the date? It works great. See, it's the 26th today!

Of course, this works fine as long as a) you remember to set the date every morning and b) you either remember that you remembered or remember that you forgot. And one word of caution, this technique is for advanced users only. If not having the pearl at 12 o'clock will drive you crazy, do not attempt this without supervision.

So while it doesn't make the date window obsolete it can be useful if you don't have one.

While this is a nice idea and a good way to save some money its the thin end of the wedge. What's next - using your cell phone instead to tell time? This will be the end of all civilisation, Sir Humphey!

Go two liner like Mikes' and mine and be part of Rolex history. Easily priced between $3600 - $4300. Slap a NATO or other band to switch it up from time to time and its like you have more watches than one.

I just got my 114060 ND SUBC. I love it! I have had many Rolex sport watches over the last 30+ years, all with the cyclops and date. If you want to know the date look at your cell phone. The ND is so clean looking it is great. I don't miss the date at all. Whatever SUB you get, you are going to love the bracelet with SEL, solid center links, AND the Glidelock clasp which is awesome. It is the most comfortable Rolex sport watch I have ever owned. I wear ir every day.
