I will be looking at a Datejust in the next few days and I have been told it was made in 1979. Don't know anything except it has recently been serviced and asking price is $3200.00 Was wondering if the fact that it has an acrylic crystal have a negative on it vs. Sapphire? Wish I knew more, have to see it first. Any advice appreciated.

Thats simply a matter of personal preference really, both have advantages and disadvantages. As far as I recall there was no sapphire on the DJ's until around 87/88. Price sounds a tad high initially, but that would also depend on a lot of other factors. If it has the original box(es), books, certificate, been serviced and is mint, then id say its actually pretty good. Post some pics if you can once you've seen it. Good luck!

Acrylic crystals are fine, but I prefer sapphire. This price is high for a 1979, unless there is more to the story. With most older Rolex, I assume that it will need a full service in the next year or two. This will add $500+ to the price, so you're now talking about a $3,700 investment.

Unless it has some diamonds on it, or is solid gold, the price is way out of line. Perhaps a seller who isn't tuned in to reasonable market value? There's a nice ToG from that era here in classifieds for almost $1K less...

No big deal. Just get some polywatch or use toothpaste to glean up acrylic scratches.

Be careful too regarding the bracelet and "stretch" That might trigger more money invested if it is nearly gone, as the ones for sale often are.

I looked at the Datejust today, going to pass on this one. Bracelet had a lot of stretch in it.
