Not as many vintage sales in the forum ?

I am curious why we dont have more vintage sales in the forum. I know these trusted power sellers must have an easier time getting the nearly new watches...but i would love to see more vintage items...even if not from the power sellers

I have been on several of the recommended sites..lots of great pieces (and prices)

You can't find a decent 5513,1680,1665 or 1675 anymore. Especially ones from the late 70's. Nothing but junk or high end stuff out there these days. It sucks.

any suggestions where to look? I would love a vintage or birth year 1016 but I am finding so many fake dials, or break the bank prices...hard to know who to trust for a decent piece...doesnt need to be investment grade, just nice and genuine.....

VRF
Here
The Bay but allow experts to scrutinize the pics.

I always shop condition first. Finding a "birthyear" watch to me is asking for trouble because you limit yourself WAY too much.

For those of us that have sold many great vintage watches here, and continue to do so, I would have to disagree with this assessment. There have been many fine vintage Rolexes offered for sale here on TRF.

I have no idea what junk you are referring to for sale here.

I think you misunderstood me..or i didnt make my point well. I was referring to junk on the internet (although i didnt use the work junk). MY point was that the good trusting sellers seem to be here in the forum, but the majority of offerings seem to be newer watches.

i like ebay very much. however, my best pieces i have found by rotating and visiting my local antique/pawn shops and the watchmaker at the corner of my block. of course, it took me 15 years to find my gems this way. DONT RUSH IT. Take your time!

Harry already knows my insane eBay story. To offer a bit of advice, when that eBay package arrives, set your phone to video if you can, and start shooting as you open the package and the box, open the back of the watch if you can, and photograph what's inside. Wind the watch to see if it works. If you determine it is fake/not as advertised/non working, broken, film yourself resealing the box, put some kind of a sticker over the seal with the date and time, and ship it back. That way you won't have some fraudster claiming you changed the movement on the fake watch he sent you.

SEE...this is what I mean. This is the last thing anyone needs, when making a $5,000 purchase. Better to have a different hobby. But also its because I do not know enough about them and am not that interested in weeding thru fake watches and fraud sellers to find that one gem. I have bought and sold many things on ebay since i joined in 1996 (the stone ages)..but it is a VASTLY different arena now.

I prefer a recommendation to a trusted seller

As someone who deals in Vintage watches often I will tell you that you can find even the rarest of vintage Rolex rather easy if you are willing to pay the going rate for it. I disagree that crisp watches are getting hard to find. What has happened is that there is BIG demand for them and with demand comes an increase in price as the supply cannot meet the demand.

You could try this list of sellers that members here have made recommendations in while doing your own research
http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=18046, do note the caveats there too.

Also go through this list of vintage watch terms to learn about so that you can make an informed decision on what you are looking for in a vintage watch.

Thank you so very very much for all this research, cruvon. And yes, I agree that we don't get many OLD vintage watches for sale on TRF. It would be nice to have more, but I understand the constraints, and the difficulty in providing any type of warranty on a vintage watch. Then there are the service aspects. I don't think Rolex has many parts on hand for my 1912 ladies watch :-)

The list that Cruvon put together is very good. The trusted sellers on there were vetted by members. They have reputations to keep up, so I very much doubt they would sell you anything that isn't 100% legit. I was mostly lucky on eBay. Now I look for trusted sellers. The money you "save" on the Bay is nothing if you have to then pay 500.00 for service despite the seller claiming they serviced it because they opened the back and blew out some dust.

Most high volume dealers focus on modern because it is more commoditized. There are many nuances to vintage watches that can impact value, and thus buying / selling requires more detailed diligence relative to modern Rolex.

That being said, it seems like you are hunting for a 1016. Relative to the 5513 / 1680 / 1675, the 1016 has always been the less popular of the bunch. This, combined with my hunch that 1016 owners are more "loyal" (less inclined to flip), makes finding good examples a bit harder.

As a 1016 fanatic, I have seen a few good condition matte 1016s sold publicly by top dealers this year. While it's important to be patient and find the right one, fairly priced examples sell quickly and you need to act fast.

Finding the "right" watch takes time...
I looked for three years before finding and purchasing the watch I bought this past January...
Three years...No joke...And during that time I purchased and then sold two that proved to be not to my liking...
Hey...If it were easy anyone could do it...

I agree. Went through 4 5513's before finding the one I liked.

Is it all power sellers? Is there a place where collectors sell to each other?

Mate, if you're refering to the vintage sellers list http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=180461, I can categorically state that it's purely a member recommended list with no influence from the owners, moderators or sellers, and if you page through it, it speaks for itself and is as transparent as it gets!

Asshole comment.

We are always ready to close the entire FS section down at any time.

Lots of hassle, second only to the Watchout section.

You mean banned for the 3rd or 4th time.
You keep re-incarnating yourself.
