Icon20 Red Sub Help

Hi all,

A little background to start. I am very VERY new to the vintage rolex scene and have basically only seen high-end pieces (1665, 1680 red etc) at watch auctions but have recently taken a liking to the idea of adding a red sub on top of my sub-c for a little variety and collectibility. A jeweler i know has one and it seems to be in good condition but from what i have read he is asking too much for it. Going to post two pice which most likely do not properly describe the watch nor do they have serial numbers or serious lug shots but just want to know if i should even pursue this any further. Any info you could give on the originality of the dial and or bezel would be greatly appreciated (almost positive neither are original. BTW Seller is asking 9500 including an appropriate bracelet which i have not had a look at and claims the entire watch is original.

Thanks in advance!

Alex

Why do you think the dial and bezel are not original? Looks good to me, lovely colour faded insert! Prob needs a new crystal and the crown looks a bit chewed up. More pics would be great, - get the serial no. to date it - but I think it's worth looking into further. Negotiate the price a little, perhaps?! Good luck!

from an absolutely amateur point of view the the bezel insert and dial looked a bit too good to be true. Will be going back to take more pictures and get a serial number. The dealer has an excellent selection of vintage and modern watches but i hesitate to buy something this expensive from them because of an experience i had looking at a dlc'd daytona he had for sale. the bracelet was clearly from a datejust (not a fliplock clasp) and he seemed a bit too convinced that it was authentic for me to be too comfortable. On the other hand if this red sub is in fact legit I want it and I know he will deal.

A little free advice:
Unless someone has bought a watch NEW, there is no way to tell what is original and what is not...And anyone who tells you otherwise is not being truthful...

For my money, as long as everything is authentic and period correct, that is all that matters...

Buy the seller...

You will always pay more from a dealer then from a private individual...
The vast majority of "Dealers" I have dealt with over many years have proven to be, lets say, less then honest...There are some dealers who are very honest and a pleasure to deal with but unfortunately they are more the exception then the rule...

There is ALWAYS another watch out there...If you are 100% comfortable...WALK AWAY!!!

Look at and familiarize yourself with the RED 1680 before buying....This will save you much heart-ache in the future...

Has the watch been serviced??? If so, by whom? Does he have PROOF of the service???
A service can run you $1000 before you know it...

Hope that helps...

That advice might have been worth paying for. I will have to do some research and get some more pictures of the watch and bracelet but based on what i am seeing from this jeweler recently I'm thinking that this particular watch could be legit and it can be had for the right price as i think he will be more interested in my business in the future (diamond dealer who will surely want me to buy my big rock from him). As far as service goes, there is no service history so i am factoring in a full service when i negotiate. If i am pleasantly surprised when the estimate comes in then that will be great news but seems stupid to assume that it doesn't need to be serviced.

Thanks for the reply Clayton. Any reactions to the watch itself or are the pictures just not helpful?

As Vincent said, based on these pictures it looks legit...
But a serial number and some better pictures are always a help...
