Red sub or 5512?
What would you guys pick? A vintage red sub or a 5512? i can't decide... :(

I just went through a similar evaluation - 5513 or 1680 and ended up taking the best example of what I could find. I am so glad I did. In my case, It is WAY better having a pristine example of a 1680 vs a routine example of the 5513.

With condition being equal, I would absolutely get the Red sub.

If the 5512 is a great example of a gilt dial
then I would go for the 5512 :-) that said find the best example of whatever you would love to wear and go for it.

as much as i love the Red Sub...If the condition were equal, as stated above, I would personally go with the 5512. Get what YOU like...period.

That all depends...There are 5512's and then there are 5512's! If you are talking about a 63' Swiss only Underline 4 line gilt vs. a Red Sub then of course no question...5512! If you are talking about a late 5512 matte dial vs. an Mk1 Red Sub well then of course Red Sub.
For me it would be quite hard to beat an early PCG Gilt 4 line 5512 in pristine condition. Happy hunting and remember there are many variances in vintage Rolex and wide gaps between certain references which create major price differences. Also finding superlative early 5512's close to impossible vs. finding later series Red Subs. Regardless of what one does buying from a reputable person and best overall example is paramount to decision. As stated above also--get the one that speaks to you most.

With all respect to the Red SUB, a 5512 or 5513 watch like the one in the picture below is more beautiful than a Red Sub (PS- Those watches are not mine but I am looking for more or less a similar one)

Guys, thanks for the great advice and pictures. After seeing the picture below I made up my mind: a 5512 it is! I still the think a red Sub is really nice, but you must all know that I own a Sub C. I think a 5512 is more different from a Sub C than a red Sub... Don't you guys agree?
What a beauty!! What can you guys tell me about the model above? And what are the things that are importent when buying a 5512 in terms of value? School me! Thanks guys |

There are a lot of subs with date that I would like to own (I have 3 currently) but when I get around to getting a no date, 5512 is the only one I lust after.

And in the end, you either have to go with your gut, or resign yourself to the fact that you'll eventually wind up buying both. For what it's worth: As much as I love my 1680, which is a lot, the simplicity of the no-date Subs (new and old) is just unbeatable. To me, it's the purest expression of the sport Rolex. I think you should go with the 1665. I prefer the rail dial, but anyone of the vintage ones is fine. Double red is awesome too.
