My first foray into Vintage Rolex - The 5513.

While in all honesty, I'm not sure if this is actually ref. 5513, but my dear close friend who sold me this watch, and I trust him fully, told me is 5513.

But disclaimer warning: This is NOT for vintage purists, for there are parts that has been replaced, and I have no complaints about it. But I would totally agree that it would be missing it's "true vintage" components and lose some of it's "original history". But it's a vintage to me nonetheless.

It is a true beauty, and I wish, I had found a truly fully original one in this condition - but I know it would be highly unlikely, and the price would have not been for me to purchase.

The patina is clean and is in the same tone and colour, even the pearl in the bezel. I have no idea how they did that, but I do believe the insert has been replaced (well it looks TOO NEW to be a vintage of that age). The casing and lugs has been polished quite extensively, but not too visible to the naked eye.

Matched with my favorite NATO from Wotancraft, I think it's a killer.

The dial is indeed original.

The serviced part would be the bezel insert, and the crown which is now a trip-lock, originally was twin-lock.

Everything else is in it's rightful state. And yes, the dial is amazing - the main reason why I got it in the first place!

Thanks for the compliments guys!

The slight smudge on the dial is actually because of the plexi, I forgot to wipe my sticky fingers off it LOL.

That is an ugly piece, (sending subliminal messages to trade for a Timex) all just trouble, purist or not.

You don't want that (sending subliminal messages to trade for a Seiko) burden of such an old and disheveled piece.

I will make it easier for you (and sending subliminal messages to trade for anything I own)

Seriously, that is one of the more Drool Worthy pieces in a while

I love it!

Gorgeous! Serious piece with the gilt chapter ring and pointed guards for a first foray into vintage. A period correct insert and twinlock crown can be easily sourced if you so choose.

What i'm really interested to know - where can I get wotancraft natos like yours?

LOL - Yea, I mean, whats to like about this anyway? It's old, it's battered, it doesn't even come with a bracelet!

I think I will be sourcing for a period correct insert, and leave the trip lock. I honestly prefer the trip lock is much better for protection due to the availability of the rubber sealing, which IMHO will protect the dial further down the line.

The Wotancraft NATO is from Wotancraft himself, my friend and I ordered a couple of straps together to save shipping cost. You can find his website here:

I think your watch has a great patina'd look!!

Congratulations!

I, myself, picked up 5513 November of last year, and I haven't had it off my wrist for more than a few days, since I bought it. These wear great, on a Nato, and I'm sure you will enjoy every minute it's on your wrist!

i don't understand why you would think this watch is no dream for vintage purists

how many of us still have the original insert (or think they do) ?
a trip lock crown is no exeption on vintage 5513's or others

it is an amazing example of a vintage gilt 5513 and you should enjoy wearing this baby !!
