Rarity.

This one looks like it's either unbuffed or buffed properly.

Personally, I'd take that 5517 on Eprey over 100 of these.

To a certain degree, comparative rarity.

To a greater degree, desirability to those with this sort of money to spend.

Comex are an attractive brand. Domino Pizza, not so much.

I'd imagine an Explorer II branded by Rolex for Red Adair Service and Marine Co and numbered issued to his firefighter staff would also have been worth 25 times the price of a standard watch to collectors.

No such watch, though.

Much like my experience from my first foray into the equity markets...I found you have to have buyers willing to pay your asking price to enable you to realize a profit.......Don't see that here

I honestly think those days are past. Some things are hyped out of the atmosphere and the COMEX was one of them. I worked with divers who used to get them issued from COMEX and then hawk them around Aberdeen and Stavanger for a few hundred $$$!!!

Lunacy. These weren't even great watches and a coleague of mine once traded his issued COMEX for an SD and $2,500. He hated that it didn't run very well and was constantly needing serviced.

I don't understand anyone not connected with the diving industry wanting one, tbh.

Takes different horses to make a race...folks are in pursuit of something rare, and this is as good as anything else, albeit not IMHO rare enough to command these prices.

I wonder why he is still so respected when every one of his big crown watches have obvious redials, a couple of which are made to look extremely rare (red writing) but are just redials of dials that don't exist..

I've never understood why Comex are watches are so desirable. Same for some Panerai models from the mid-late 90s that were $1500 new with ETA movements, now selling for upwards of $40k. Don't get it.

Even if I had that sort of money to burn, I'd feel pretty stupid buying that one (so I wouldn't), because, in my humble view, you're essentially paying about 80 grand over the odds to have a big, ugly, additional logo, which draws the eye and ruins the dial. And some interesting provenance, but... 100K? Whatever floats your boat... or sinks your sub.

Stamp collectors. So called "watch collectors" who artificially create an unrealistic perception of a rarity. All the other stamp collectors say "Ooh & Aah" and perpetuate the myth. Then there are the gullible with more money than cents who try to justify the myth by thinking they have jumped on a money maker. Before you know it, the prices are astronomical.

My two cents & liver vented. To all the owners of COMEX Rolexes, well done.

I never really understand the rap culture term 'haters ' until I see a thread like this.

I don't get thimble collectors , but then I don't need to , I just need to know its something that gives pleasure to those who do get it , and I wish them every happiness in it.

For all of you that are negative on the subject , please just take a minute to realise for each of those $10k watches you own , $100 is the true value of the watch .. $9900 is your perceived value of the branding , heritage .. Perception of that bit of metal that you have bought into and that brings you happiness ... Once you are honest enough to accept that principal you will realise its all relative and you should get Comex and the people who enjoy them or mils or pn , or big Patek or anything else ...

For those of you who think we are mugs ... What on earth do you think the Seiko collectors think of you ?
