Anyone else suprised/dissapointed no "new" models? No 42s?

SO.... Basically, we have a Daytona with an..... "interesting" color choice and a new metal (Platinum). I am very suprised at this... I expected the only all-platty to remain the signature Rolex, the President, but think a platty Daytona might be a good idea for another (very) high-end model in that metal. Not for me, for that kind of money I would go with a Pres or a Sky-Dweller, or maybe a Patek, but if you like it then I hope you get one soon. The thing I find unusual is the color choice.... Like the Day-Date, I think an all-Platty watch should be attractive but subtle, not scream out with a controversial color. There are other ways to differentiate it from the SS model (like they do with the WG). But, Just IMHO.

The SS YM was also a big surprise.... Is Rolex trying to increase the sales by opening it up to us more common folk? And on this particular model it is hard to believe. This is Rolex's most specific targeted model, with the 10 minute counter for yaght-racing. The GMT is supposed to be for pilots, but many people have a use for a second time zone. The Daytona, for race-car drivers, but lot's of uses for a stop-watch. But the YM? What other activities do you use a count-down 10 minute timer? I submit very few. So, the specific target demography of this model is either a yacht-owner, or someone involved in the sport of yacht-racing; typically an opulent sport with wealthy members. Why introduce the SS?

The GMT-Blue. Very "interesting" as well. I actually like it, but if they proved they can do the bezel color thing, why not the tried and true Pepsi/Coke that has become so Iconic? The Red and black (or blue) also actually served a purpose, the idea being red being daylight hours and black night... So... is the Blue for the blue sky that shows during daylight?

Finally, no NEW models.... like (I was hoping for) a 42 model in the GMT ? They have the movement, the case, only thing that would have been necessary to manufacturer was a bezel, but how hard could that have been?

All in all, there were some very interesting (read confusing) releases, but nothing really new.

Just my

There was no news. Releasing the same model in a different color combo or metal isn't news, barely an update.

I think it is cool they brought back the Stellas but overall I'm underwhelmed. Yet again.

I have to agree with you Patrick, I'm somewhat disappointed too.

I thought the Sky-Dweller was pretty interesting! First Annual Calandar from Rolex seemed like ground breaking news to me!

Sam, I have to agree with that one, forgot about it. I just wish they had a stainless steel version of it already.

I like the introduction of the YMII in SS, I don't own a yacht (or a boat for that matter) but I can use it to start the countdown on my wife while she gets ready
I have a sub, but I've never been diving...
I'm not overwhelmed with what ROlex put out this year, but I'm happy overall.

Well lets be honest not much from Rolex over the last 15 plus years to get really excited about. There own chrono movement ever 2000 some very minor updates on models and the YM11, over rated expencive ceramic inserts DSSD PLUS Skydweller. And with this years quite disappointing effort so no real big surprise to myself. All we got few new dial colours ,metal options on a few models, some models available now on straps, and a bi colour ceramic insert WOW.

I'm holding judgement on the Pt950 Daytona until I can see it. My glacier blue dial is more often a pale green than blue so it may not look as bad as it looks in pics.

I love the SS YMII. What's it good for? I don't know... grilling steaks or timing sex?

I think it's really cool that they finally put the YMII in SS. I wouldn't say you need to be rich to sail. I have plenty of middle income friends who sail and participate in regattas who might buy this piece. Sailing Sunfish or Lazers isn't that expensive. I think it was a good choice on Rolex's part.

The new GMTIIC I am kind of disappointed about. Not going to lie. The blue is just completely out of place. I am sure it will sell and people will buy it, but I think I might just go ahead and pick up a green GMT. Atleast green is the Rolex corporate color and makes some sense. All this new model tells me is that Rolex is not going back to the Coke or Pepsi color scheme any time soon.

Me personally I don't like the idea of rolex going bigger in size. I am pleased with Tudor, day dates and the GMT :)

Always interesting reading your comments...

I personally feel this is a nice progression for the company...

From here...

To here...

How can one not get excited? Or better yet see the progression?

Love you Sam but if you gave me the choice I'd enthusiastically take either explorer if it was a gift, meaning it would be improper to sell. If not I wouldn't even turn the bezel on the Sky Dweller before selling it and buying those explorers.

Totally agree with you sir! As you are aware I own a 1655, I am all for vintage, however, happy to see the company think outside the box! Trust me when I say the chase and hunt for the proper vintage far supersedes the modern stuff I post here on TRF ;-)

Here are some Easter bunnies for you!

Be well my friend!

Just my two cents...I kind of like that Rolex doesn't make a lot of changes...new models..etc. My reasoning is pretty simple. To me it states confidence, it says something to me about the brand that they aren't trying to keep up with other watch companies that are always chasing new fads. I totally get why there is a desire from Rolex fans for change but to me the fact that the change comes slowly speaks to the old school and I like it...IMHO

I have learned over the years that this is one of the most anti-climactic events I bother to pay attention to

Not asking for a wall clock strapped to my wrist....just a lousy +2mm for the bigger wrist folks out there...

.......and to the naysayers +2mm in case size doesn't throw balance of dial or movement or whatever off....my $.02
