Cleaning rolex.
I know it's made to go in water but I've never dared to.
I've got a few marks on it (from a drooling Newfoundland) and I'm going to wash it. I know the crown needs to be pushed in fully and turned tight. Mine is currently turned so I can't turn it anymore. Is this too tight or just right ready to go swimming ?. Nervous...

Finger tight is tight enough, don't over tighten your crown.
As a matter of fact, even an unscrewed crown is waterproof! So you can shower, wash your hands, etc. However, if you're planning to dive, your watch will be waterproof to the rated depth only if the crown is screwed down. Hope this makes you feel more secure about your GMTIIC |

The crowns on Rolex watches are waterproof to their rated depth when unscrewed. For a triplock that is >500 Bar.

Thanks for that.
It's strange how nervous I am haha. I've been wanting a rolex for the last 20 odd years and last November I was in a position to get one. I guess I don't want to wait 20 years for one and do something wrong to break it.

Don't ever be tempted to handle whilst showering, those marble bases don't take any prisoners

Finger tight is fine. I wore my LV in the Maldives last week for 10 days of diving (30+ dives), and it's fine. The only time it left my wrist was for 1 airport security check. Only approached 3 atmospheres (relative), so relax. A friends two-tone was also fine.

Hi,
I remember the first time I wore my first Rolex in the shower. I kept glancing at it every few seconds, thinking "Have the hands stopped yet?! Have I broken it? HAVE I?!". Needless to say, both the Rolex and I survived quite intact. I think it's a natural fear to have at the very beginning, particularly if prior to the Rolex you've always worn non-water-resistant watches that had to be taken off - and even more so if this is your first expensive, "proper" watch purchase. You'll get used to it very quickly, and you'll see that your Rolex will easily withstand whatever your daily routine throws its way. |

Thanks for the advice. I'll try clean it up tomorrow in warm soapy water.

So now he can go straight to the t-shirt phase

Finger tight. If its an oyster and is new or been pressure checked, don't worry. Get it wet, take it the shower etc. you'll be ok

I once spilled a beer on my watch. I cried. It was my last beer.

Warm soapy water and a soft bristle tooth brush, it will be fine. Get all the grime in between the links of the bracelet while you're at it.
Don't tighten that crown too much, finger tight is fine. I clean mine once or twice a week.

Once a month wash it with warm water, a little soap & a soft tooth brush. Dry it with a microfiber cloth & you're good to go.

I've had my GMT for 22 years. It's traveled all of the world with me on countless adventures, and been in the pool and sea more times than I can count.
Use it as it's designed to be used, and enjoy. |

My GMT, the second after foolishly parting with my first, has been with me for a few months shy of 16 years. I swim, dive, snorkel, fish, shower, fly, fart and do just about evreything else with it on - to include passing through TSA security. As for washing, taking a shower with it it and getting warm soapy water on it is good. Once in a while you may choose to place your watch in a warm glass of water with some mild hand soap overnight. You may be surprised to see what separated from the watch when you view it in the morning. Cannot over empasize what has been posted previously about NEVER taking off you watch over a tile or hard floor - expecially in the shower.

You guys and your watches worrying over a bit of above surface water some of my watches have spent over 600 hours underwater. And one SD while diving in the Red Sea I noticed at 30m my crown was fully unscrewed but I did not panic as I had a group of divers with me I was guiding them over the reef.On return to surface watch was fine and is still fine today, but its always safe to make sure crown is just screwed down finger tight. There is no need to force it to much as too much force will possibly damage or put premature wear on the crown internal seal.
