Explorer II or gmt...or gmt new black and blue.
So I don't have a dual time zone in my collection. Should I start with the explorer II or the gmt ( leaning towards explorer). But the new black and blue gmt just came out at Basel so now I'm leaning towards that. Thoughts?

Both are cool modern Rolex references... Get the one you think looks best on you...
Here are pics of mine... Good luck!

My user name says it all, although the new GMT is pretty nice! I am pretty excited to see it in the flesh.

I love the black & blue GMT but my woman hates it. I ended up getting the current black one instead.

That's a really tough call. Both are, in my humble opinion, the two best pieces Rolex makes right now (albeit I much prefer the LN over the BLNR). With the Explorer II you get a dial color choice which is a big deal. A lot of people like the larger case size at 42mm. I could really take it or leave it. If you just want an all purpose sports watch, the Explorer II is the way to go. You don't have to worry about the PCLs, you get one of the most shock resistant watches Rolex makes, and you really have no need for the rotatable bezel.
If it's your first and only Rolex I would tend to go with the black dial. I myself own a white dial but that's because I own other black dial watches. There is no wrong answer there at all. Try both and see what you like. |

Explorer II without a doubt. I just traded in my GMT II today for that watch and I must say I love it. I can wear this watch with anything and it is extremely comfortable!

Explorer, the classic case shape in 42mm makes it unique from rolex sports selections

If I were starting all over, I would wait for the GMT II Black and Blue. I like the splash of blue: seems to me just right to give the watch character and serve as a dress watch (the PCLs work for this also) as well as a sports watch.
In addition, I prefer the size. The Explorer II is a little large for my wrist. |

If money isn't a concern, just wait for the new BB. However, the new Explorer II models have seen price drops by buying used or even discounted new from ADs. The new BB is already popular and will sell high for close to a year after release I'm sure. Economically, it makes sense to snag the Explorer II now, and the GMT next year after demand goes down. It also depends on the rest of your collection. If you don't have any other white dials, the Explorer II is definitely the best. Daytona white dials are nice too, but I love the look of the Explorer II dial. It fit nicely in my collection and is going over really well right now with my summer attire!

I have the current EXPII with white dial. I love everything about it, the size, the fit, the beautiful dial and markers and of course that orange hand. I think it looks great against the white dial. Another thing I really like about it is the blue lume. I love seeing it against the white dial in all sorts of different lighting conditions. Sometimes it looks a very pale aqua colour, other times a bright blue colour. It never seems to be the same. I am an expat living abroad so I use the 2 time zones every day. I can tell the time in my home country whenever I want. I also travel a lot so it works great then also.
Right now I think the next watch I am going to get will be the new two-tone GMT. I need to see it in person first but this is what I am saving for. If I was starting out again I would still go for the EXPII. Please note though that before I saw the EXPII I never really had much time for white dialled watches. They just didn't sing to me. When I saw the EXPII that all changed. I eventually went with white because for a white dialled watch I loved it more than any I had seen before. I knew that if I was to buy another 10 watches in my life they would probably all be darker colour dials. For this reason I snapped up the white dial while I saw one I loved. It was such a hard choice though at first deciding between black or white dial. Good Luck. Whatever way you go you will be happy |

I like having a rotating bezel and I don't mind PCLs so my choice would be the GMT. Of the GMTs, I actually prefer the all black insert.
For you, if you're undecided with a self confessed "leaning" towards the new blue/black version, I would suggest you wait to try that on. Waiting a few months is not that bad in the grand scheme of things if it means getting what really makes you happy. At least by then you can say you have given the matter a considerable amount of thought! |

GMTIIc IT is so awesome that it does not even have a name.... I don't like the blue / black combo. So I would go classic Ceramic GMT II.
