Slight lume fault
After reading jj's post about faults to look for, I took a much more critical look at my new watch. To my dismay there seems to be a spot in the centre of the second hand where the lume is either dull or thin. What do I do. I bought the watch when I was away from home, (from an). Is this coverd by warrenty, do I just take it to my local AD to be sent back and looked at, or am I being over the top do I just wait for it to be done in 5 years when I have it serviced? You may say well it can't be that bad but now I've seen it its all I can look at.

Ian, I have the EXACT same "problem" with my SS GMT IIc.
But it is barely noticeable, and doesn't even show up on pics. I decided to live with it until next service and then have the second's hand replaced by another one. The guarantee should definately cover this.

Maybe if you give the dial a thorough "charge" with a flashlight, you can make the "fault" visible on a pic.
I just gave my dial a quick flash with my Wiseled Tactical 1,500 lumen flashlight: I didn't manage to catch it, but anyway here is how my SS GMT IIc looks like with the lume boosted up.

You must consider that the space for SL coating is very tiny on that second's hand, and if the coating is just ever so slightly thinner at one point, it shows up.
Anyway, I don't think it's a big deal, and it will be sorted out during an RSC service.

That’s reassuring. When I eventually get it serviced it will be sorted then?

I have a ss/plat yacht master, Brand New, that looks like it has a little grey in the 6'oclock lume, but its still works at night, I have to look very close up but it looks like a little grey streak. Could be the lume material, I don't know.

You can see it on this photo clearly. The grey area in the centre of the dot on the sweeping hand. What do you think? What should I do?

Thanks for the picture, Ian. I understand now.
Well, you could take it back to your AD for a full second hand replacement. They usually have plenty of those in stock......or wait until your first service is due which would be like five years down the line. JJ

I hope you are still happy with your SS GMT IIc, though?
Don't let that small issue put it down! Also, if you don't focus on it, you don't see it. If it is any comfort to you, I had the SAME issue (SAME spot!!) on an SS Sub Date I once owned. But it is very "drastic" to have the whole movement taken out and hands un- and re-installed just because of this tiny fault. You end up with other issues such as misaligned 24 hour hand or dust under the crystal, smudge/fingerprints on the hands, scratches on the caseback from opening the case, etc., etc.

I would leave it alone. Getting anyone to play with the hands and dial could introduce just under the crystal.

:Yes,the loupe thing from JJ has certainly stirred up a very interesting hornets nest.I just noticed on my 15200 Date (D-series), that there is NO lupe(?) at all over the top of the bar marker at the 12 position!!.That particular hornet stung a bit at first as we Rollie fans tend to be rather perfectionist (the nature of the beast,I guess).Checked it out in the dark last night and sure 'nuff ...no reflection. But WTH,I figure it is unique to my watch an' I still love her.But strange non-the-less.

I don't think it is anything to worry about. Sometimes I really think we expect to much. It may not be so much a "flaw" as just how applied lume looks within acceptable tolerances of variation. Why do we expect it to be perfectly even? It is still just a watch made by human beings.....

obviously the process for luminova coating on the hands is not well controlled by Rolex, and their QC failed to detect these outgoing comestic defects. tints of grey on the luminova should mean thin coatings, and poor illumination is totally unacceptable. you should get it changed at any RSC

As someone who has had the dial & bezel ring replaced on his GMT11-C along with a couple of regulations and a twisted clasp rectified I guess it is no suprise when I suggest that you visit the RSC in London to get them to have a look at it for you. Despite the problems I have had the RSC have been great and have addressed all my concerns. Might be worth having a chat with them just to ease your mind one way or the other - even if they say that there is a fault and you decide not to replace it at this time then they will record the fact on their database - this should then mean that when the watch is serviced in a few years time you have no problems having the hand replaced under warranty.
