Decision: Upgrade SS Daytona to YG Daytona

Hello, I'm new here but I have been a browser/fan for many years. I have a SS Daytona and a new Sub, both black, and recently I have been looking at selling both to fund a YG Daytona with black MOP/diamond dial with a 15% discount. My main reason for finally registering (and not remaining a closet reader) is to ask for opinions.

I currently need to sell both the SS Daytona and the SS Sub and put in a lot more money to get it, but unfortunately, I tried it on in store and now I'm hooked. I can't say I have seen anything more beautiful, the dial is simply stunning.

The problem is that people I talk to tell me I'm nuts to sell the SS Daytona at all and they also seem to think that YG watches are a bit over-the-top and hard to pull off.

I know this has been asked before but what do you guys and girls think? Should I drop the idea and remain content or go with what I really want?

The only upgrade IMHO is the price its exactly the same movement, and myself would never part with two watches for one that's basically the same except for the metal. But its your watches and you must decide and know one else even with 15% discount which IMHO if buying new would ask for more.

Very well said. I would think it over very carefully. Two for one is almost never a good idea IMO.

This is the main reason for posting the question. If I can squeeze it in, I'll try and keep the Sub but I don't have enough to keep the Daytona. I know for sure I don't want 3 but the idea of keeping a SS model for every day use makes sense, but then why buy a watch to keep it in the safe?

Sad thing is that in a few months I can probably make the difference to keep the Daytona but I'm pretty sure this will be gone by then, and MOP dials are always different, the next one I see might not be as nice.

Will the store accept a deposit and let you pay it off?

Another good idea, I don't think they take deposits but I have purchased from them before so it's worth asking.

Imho the gold/mop/diamond may be too over the top to have as an one and only watch. I would strongly consider keeping one of your Stainless Steel models for the odd times you want to fly under the radar more.

No. Bad idea. Buy what you like and can afford.

It sounds like emotionally you already decided you want it - and it seems like you are fine with wearing it every day. So - if you can pay cash (or trade in + cash) go for it. If you have to get creative (even a little) financially then wait it out. It's a luxury item - I may be in the minority, but I don't agree with financing luxury.

Thanks for your reply, do you know the dial option I'm talking about? It's amazing! The picture on the Rolex website does not do it justice, you really need to see one in person.

I have attached the pic from the Rolex site but the one I found is full gold, not strap.

Obviously, go with what you want, but an MOP- and diamond-dial 18K Daytona is vastly different than a stainless steel model. Give it a good think; gold isn't as durable as steel, which is a factor if it's going to be worn regularly, and you'd have to be really sure that such a flashy watch suits your personal style. I suspect that you'd miss having the steel watches after a while.

The look is rather over-the-top and hard to pull off, as well. To be blunt, that particular 18K Daytona is probably best-suited for someone who doesn't have to sell other watches to get one.

That is a very good point and one of my main concerns. I have to admit that it does seem very flashy but, I'm living for now (ie: impulse). I know it's not always the best way to do things, but my first Rolex (a datejust) was also an impulse buy and I never regretted it. Once I put this one on, it just felt right. If I had the full amount I would have bought it there and then.

I'm not too concerned about durability, I intend to wear it every day but I'm extremely careful with my things (I don't baby them though).

My main concerns:
1: SS Daytona is very hard to replace (here in the UK) so if I ever want one again, I would probably need to wait the 2 years again.

2: Full gold is very obvious. I don't mind a bit of flash with a suit but I'm not sure how shorts and t-shit is going to look.

I find that a YG sports model on a bracelet is more suited to casual wear than business attire, especially with the diamond dial — which I would advise against in either case. It might even go better with the right kind of shorts/tee than most suits, as a weekend and holiday watch.

Of course, if we're talking about the kind of suit you wear with a purple velour fedora and a diamond-studded cane, then it's an ideal match!

I actually think that gold Daytona looks quite a beauty, if were me I would choose the one without the diamonds though. You might be able to pull off casual wear with a leather strap on it if has no diamonds on dial but you never know till you try even the diamonds version. Maybe post some wrist shots from the AD!

About not being able to get another SS Daytona if you sold yours, the good sellers here always have one if you ever change your mind:).

You have two great everyday watches. That Daytona - not so much. Can you wear it everyday without issues? If not, I'd save for it.

This is almost exactly what my wife said when I told her what I wanted. Her response: "you only live once and you can't take it (money) with you". In other words, go buy it and enjoy it while you can.

Thanks for all the responses, It's really helping and not helping all at the same time

That's funny, because if I told my wife I wanted to buy a gold diamond Daytona...she would say, "you only live once, and if you want it to continue, you will forget about that watch!"

Keep the sub and trade in your Daytona plus cash for the new Daytona. Sure it will take longer but you will have a dressy watch and sporty watch. I would go with a pre-owned and save a lot more than 15%.

Have you thought about going pre-owned of the Daytona strap watch.
Look around don't know about the mop dial, but they can't be had in the 13k range.

I'm in the group that thinks YG as an everyday watch is rather difficult to pull off. If you were to keep the Submariner, and sell off the SS for the YG Daytona, then I'd say you have a winning pair!

I have done a similar deal and got a 116518

My opinion? Keep the sub and sell the Daytona. Add some cash and get the YG Daytona on strap or bracelet pre owned.

Now you have one daily wearer and one special occasion/ weekend watch.

This is exactly what I need to hear (or should I say WANT to hear?). I'm going to go for it. If I can keep the Sub at the same time, I will, but I really think once I have gold, I won't want anything else and the sub will sit in the safe for most of it's life (and what a waste that will be?).

I'll post some pics when I have it
