If the 214270 said Patek on the dial it would cost 25k.

So, I've been tempted to get into the world of "better" watches.
I can truly appreciate the movements, the finishing, the history of the
Geneva seal, etc.

However, if I look around, I can't find a watch that seems to be as infinitely
wearable as my 214270 Explorer 1.

You can say the Calatrava with the screw down crown, but here is a WG
piece that's on a strap. It certainly comes closest, but is no where near
a "do everything" watch.

You can look at a Royal Oak, but again, more delicate and outrageous pricing.

I want to get a different brand and experience the high end, but the experience
seems to be very limited to black tie dinners.

Is it just me? Does anyone else have this problem?

HELP!

How about a Patek Nautilus 5711? I would say that would be just as wearable at the beach as it is with black tie and I love the white dial version.

Glashutte Sport Evolutions are nice. What about the Breguet Type XX and XXI? IWC? Lots of sport watches out there. Don't forget about Zenith. Zenith is my second favorite brand behind Rolex.

I googled "anamule." I was thoroughly confused. "Animal" for those in the same position as me.

Rolex makes fine watches, but their price increases have far-exceeded inflation. They're charging what people will pay for them, which is only far. If you're willing to spend $8.5K on a new tool watch, then they'll be there to take it. If you want the exclusivity of a $25K watch, then there will be someone there to collect that, too.

I think that may be a Southern idiom. I can only remember that my father used to use that term from time to time

He did that to a lot of words, even though he was quite verbally gifted and spoke correct English in his profession as a minister.

I think that's the beauty of the Explorer I, it may not have the flare of a sub or day date but its the perfect mix of sports and dress... As for higher end brands, I think JLC has some pretty good pieces with great history for a decent price... I can see the master control or reverso go well with casual shorts as well as it does with a suit. I wouldn't swim with it especially with a leather strap but with the price of a PP Nautilus I probably wouldn't swim with that either...

Most all high end watches today you pay around 80% for the name on the dial the other 20% for the watch.

It's the same with any high end luxury items.

I used to think it was madness spending hundreds of pounds on a pair of shoes and yet these days I somehow feel better about spending £600 on Gucci than I do spending £100 on Nike. It's all in the name and we have the little marketing wizards/gremlins to blame for it.

Apple has the best marketing in the world, people are willing to pay 3 times the price for a product that is no better than it's rivals (an in most cases worse) and when they've finished being screwed, they feel the need to tell everyone how wonderful it is (even if they cant use it) to try and justify the price they paid which in turn starts the next lemming on the path of purchase.

Yes, Apple products are overpriced but I have a mix of Apple products (iphones, iPads, iMacs, MacBooks) and other brand' items and whenever I need to contact customer service, with Apple, I get results. With the others, I'm lucky to get a rep who understands my question.

By arguing, you're proving the point

Anyway, I think you got the wrong end of the argument, I'm not slating Apple, I'm praising their sales tactics and pointing out how people buy what they are told. Trust me, every tech brand has their share idiots behind the support counter, the golden rule when calling any technical support is if you haven't been helped within the first 5 minutes, hang up and call again, the next guy might be better!

I personally find Apple hardware excellent, well designed and reliable. It's their software I think that hold them back. A lot of their stuff it well thought out but poorly implemented although they are making good progress. For example, the worst thing to happen to the mp3 player industry is iTunes, nothing is more fiddly than "syncing" with your mp3 player when all other brands can simply drag and drop like it's a USB stick.

That's why I am increasingly looking to buy a Rolex gold watch rather than 2 or 3 basic steel ones or just one Nautilus because at least I can see where the money has gone so to speak.

And if your Explorer said Seiko on it it would cost $500

Not sure what your point is? The high end world of luxury items is not rational.

This! Just as you see the PP as a similar product for much more money, many people see your Rolex in the same manner. Like all Veblen goods, the cost of purchase is not related to the cost of production.

Some people would never buy a new Rolex. A friend of mine wears MK II watches that are similar to the old 50s and 60s Rolex models. They have ETA movements and are well finished watches. He collects old Rolex models too, but would never wear them to the beach or mowing the lawn. He feels the modern pieces have strayed too far from the original design philosophy.

I agree with you.

Rolex makes a nice watch as do many other companies - some are nicer while others are cheaper. Rolex has a fairly good combination of quality and price compared to most other large brands (due to their similarly inflated prices).

If we're going to be totally honest, a 50% decrease in price would bring just about every brand closer to what I think they're worth.

Funny I was just thinking that today. Even factoring in a luxury premium if Rolex Subcs were around £3K/$5k and AP ROs £6K/$9K what a wonderful world this would be.

Maybe all the open-minded people aren't posting...

I haven't seen a trend towards more close-mindedness, seems the same now as it was except for the opinionated JJ, who we should all remember, showed us its ok to have a closed mind sometime on an issue or point, when that closed is because of a decision.
