Thoughts on possible new purchase

Greetings all. I was thinking of pulling the trigger on a new acquisition to add to my existing collection of a 16220 Datejust (engine turned bezel, silver baton dial, oyster bracelet), a 16600 Sea-Dweller 4000, a 116520 Daytona (white dial), a 116710LN GMT IIc and a 116660 Sea-Dweller DeepSea.

I have four (sort of five) things that I'm thinking about: the 116610LV green Submariner date; a 116234 Datejust with a white gold fluted bezel and silver baton dial on a Jubilee bracelet; a 116203 Datejust (two-tone, with domed bezel, silver baton dial on an oyster bracelet); or a 114200 Air-King or a 116000 Oyster Perpetual with a silver dial, either of which I would probably pop off the bracelet and wear on a black leather strap (ideally with a Rolex clasp, if I can get one).

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks for the replies. It was the Sub that I had mainly been thinking about, and I was offered a really good deal on one about a year ago, just after the last price rise. The AD will probably still do me something similar.

I'm certain that it will hold its value better than the others, but I would quite like something a little dressier or, alternatively, discrete (in the case of the Air-Kng or Oyster Perpetual). It has, however, struck me that the most obvious gap in my collection is for a Sub!

The only other complication is that I may not be able to add to the collection after this one. I am struggling to get insurance as things stand!

To get something a little dressier, I like the DJ options on Jubilee that you present. You might also want to consider the DJ on Jubilee with the white Roman dial, since you already have a DJ with silver batons.

I'm going against the grain here, the Air King would be my choice.

I'm with you. Air-King for me....Love no-date, don't like the bubble much, and really don't like green for watches, or the thought of wearing a watch named after a green monster in purple Daisy-Dukes.

I'd also consider an Explorer II (either) to enhance that collection. You're fine on divers IMO, an Exp would add a bit of variety, particularly a polar.

There seems to be quite a consensus here! I suppose they say a picture speaks a thousand words:

Strange you should suggest that. The two other things that I had thought about, but excluded before posting were the black dial Explorer II and the white Rolesor fluted bezel Datejust II, with either the silver baton dial or the black Roman dial with marker at 9 o'clock. The budget wouldn't quite stretch to a two-tone Datejust II and I prefer the two-tone Datejust anyway.

It's nice; it's discrete; I like the new dial with three Arabic numerals; and on a black leather strap, I wouldn't even have to worry about taking it off to go through security at an airport – very few people would have any idea what it was! It would also have quite a nice retro 1940s or 1950s look. Does anyone have any thoughts about popping the bracelet off and putting it on a strap?

It's a beautiful watch, but I don't like the slightly narrower Oyster bracelet they are now using on the Datejust, which slightly puts me off. It seems stupid, and I haven't ruled the watch out, but I always thought it looked better balanced with four taper links on the Oyster bracelet and a more gradual angle. The new ones have three taper links, which is present on most of the new big headed Rolexes. When I first tried on the precise Datejust I have described a few years ago, it still had the slightly wider bracelet. Being the fussy perfectionist that I am, and having seen the watch on the wider bracelet, the narrower bracelet could wind up irritating me!

Thanks all the replies. I haven't made a definite decision to take the plunge, but we shall see! Any other thoughts gratefully received.

I'd say go to an AD and check out both of the Explorer IIs in person (if you haven't already), as pics don't do them justice: the brushed bezel is really quite striking in the light. In the previous 40mm version (have both), my fave is the Polar, wears larger and is to me the more visually striking of the two, the new ones it's a bit tougher choice, though I feel the dial and orange hand on the new Polar are a bit overdone, although in pics it's always going to be far more overstated than in person so might change my mind if I see again in person...

Anyway, I'd definitely have a look at those. Wrt the DJ II, I've seen them at very reasonable prices SS in the FS forum, I think DavidSW has a very nice blue-dialed example for sale right now in fact...anyway, good luck!

It's almost unanimous. Get the LV.

If I were buying my first Sub I'd probably go LN but given your collection, the LV would be a perfect fit.
