Does anyone know what these are? (colletable?)
This set has been in my possession for years. Supposedly it is Russian in origin, but I have no idea. They are at the very least gold-plated, with the enamel work done on both sides of each utensil.
Any ideas, research, or value? |

It's called niello work, a kind of decoration that uses black for the details. Your items seem to be a gold wash over silver, with niello. Google "Russian niello" and you'll see lots of it.
Real niello was an engraving or etching technique. Now it's often reproduced just as a shallowly applied layer on metal. This stuff ranges from very valuable (the antique material) to souvenir quality that has the look but not the craftsmanship. Yours looks not to be very old, by which I mean probably the mid-twentieth century or later. Do you know its age? An example on eBay at the moment: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Russian-Silv...-/111100337632 |
