Very little difference. The D is the older of the two. The D was manufactured just before the Z. The Z has been replaced with the latest which is the M serial number.

Besides the age they'd be pretty much identical. No big changes have been made since about 1998 when Rolex changed from Tritium to Luminova (dials saying "SWISS"). After 2000 all the dials say "SWISS MADE". There are a few SD dials having different seconds markers around 6 o' clock (some of them have "full second markers" while some others have second markers that are not as long as the full ones.
Here is an example of the "half second" markes" (my now flipped SD, an M-serial). Note the 28/29 and 31/32 second markers are not as long as the other markers: This dial version you can also see on slightly older SD's, and it seems to be a draw what dial you get.

When the watch first arrived at your AD..
(if the watch is being sold as "new") it was priced about $500 less than he is most likely asking for it now. If your friend is cool with that, so be it, it's his $$ and enjoy. Personally speaking, this chaps my @ss
