We are due to go on vacation soon, and I was wondering if I should trust the hotel room safe? Its a 5 star all exclusive hotel.

I will be taking a couple of watches with me hence the question.

I will be going on vacation here in two weeks from today exactly. We usually stay at our favorite hotel down where we're going. It's 4.5 star, and does have a Rm safe as well. I have never had a problem with using the Rm safe. I'd say they're reliable. I usually take a couple watches and of course my wallet and a few other valuable things. I don't think the maid staff has access to open them. I think you're good to go. However, if I may ask, What watches are you planning on taking/wearing on your trip?

Good qusetion, I guess if I was worried about it I'd take one watch and keep it on my wrist, also if I was going to use the room safe I'd make sure that my insurance would cover the loss if one went missing.

I put my passport and misc things that are insured or relatively easy to replace. Anything of significant value goes in the safety deposit box of the hotel.

That's my suggestion.

I would also wear an nice inexpensive watch.

+1 - I'm going on vacation in a couple of days, and I plan to take one watch: my trusty Seiko 200m Diver. Great watch, and if it gets knicked/lost/broken, it's nothing I can't replace for $150 or so.

You would be surprised how many hotels have safe deposit boxes...I always use those.

Figured they must have had a backdoor to those safes since people almost definitely need help getting into their own stuff occasionally.

That video looks like its from a cheap hotel. That installed them as a hotel ammenity. My wife managed to lock us out of our hotel safe at a reputable chain. Security came up and had to call the manufacturer to give the serial number in order to get one of the two codes (one hotel and one from manufacturer)

Anything I take on a trip is considered expendable. Your homeowners may have coverage limits so check that part too.

The in-room safes only help remove temptation to otherwise honest staff.

If you are staying at just one hotel your whole vacation why don't you just take along 1 watch instead of a couple?

Hotel room and other venues with in-room safes represent a risk that you need to decide if you want to take..

They do put your stuff out-of-sight, which is the most common problem with hotel room theft - opportunity.

If you don't make a big entrance and flaunt what you have you are less likely to be singled out for room theft. Still, you shouldn't be traveling with anything that you cannot afford to lose at some point in time..

As mentioned, true valuables should be safeguarded properly.

If you've ever read any of the threads about buying a safe for your home, then one look at a flimsy hotel room safe should tell you they don't offer much protection. Yes, it's a little better than leaving your Rolex laying around in the room but that's about it, imho.

You're staying at a 5 star hotel, they will almost for sure have hotel safe deposit (you can certainly check ahead to be sure). I'll always use the hotel SD before trusting a room safe. And you have access around the clock.

BTW, it's always a good idea to ask at the front desk to flag your account to remind you on check out that you have something on deposit so you don't depart without the contents. The possibility of forgetting it may sound like a negative but it's not really since it's no different than forgetting to empty the contents of a room safe in that regard. And on the off chance I did forget and left, I'd rather have my watches sitting secured in the hotel safe than in the room safe.

Not safer than my wrist. I wouldn't trust it with an expensive watch that eventually will be noticed on your wrist at some point during your stay.
On vacation and staying in a public place, only one expensive watch comes along. I'm on vacation, don't want to be burdened with silly concerns.

None of the hotel safes I've used have a default password of "000000" but just the same I don't trust them. For my wife's Jewelery we use something like this but not exactly this:
