Which of these two will be a good watch to start a collection? My husband needs to do operations as well as consultations for his work and is in his late 30s. Do you think Explorer will be too sporty for work? It's a surprise birthday present so I will definitely need some help from you guys!

"Collections" are somewhat personal and denote a direction or theme such as every GMT ever made, or only Chronographs, etc... Of course, it certainly could mean simply a bunch of watches, although that's pretty broad.

If it were me I would go with the Explorer 39 because it is the beginning of this size/movement and has potential for future value and interest..

The OP is a basic watch that will not see any future potential except being just a "nice watch".

It is definitely not too sporty for work, regardless of the occupation.. a Timex Iron-Man would be "too sporty"

I like the Explorer for your purposes. It is a beautiful, simple dial, at 39mm is more to the sport side, but not tool size. The OP, at 36mm is dress watch size, but with that bracelet is not dressy enough, nor do you want a watch as dressy as a DJ.

The Explorer is a great looking every day watch that be worn for dress. I'd like to get one myself.

I picked the 39mm exp... modern case size that maintains a sleek oyster case, created a new movement (3132) for this reference and a great history too.

Definitely the explorer. 36mm is so small. The explorer is bigger without being to big, and getting in the way.
