I have both and many others.
My perfect phone with be in iPhone with 5 inch screen but we are not there just yet. To be honest, I would suggest the HTC One over the S4. I have both and I feel that the One is the better phone all around. My advice, I would wait to see what the fall brings in the Apple camp.

I liked the iPhone 3gs and thought that was the best form factor. The iPhone 5 is OK and I think the S3/S4 is too large, for me anyway.

Non DRM protected music purchased on iTunes will work just fine.
IF your music was bought before iTunes went DRM free, which was about three years ago, it will not work. Everything after that point will. Easy way to check: look at your file name. If it is (songname).m4p, it is protected and it will not work. If it is (songname).m4a, it will work just fine. You will, however, not be able to sync with iTunes. You'll have to drag and drop your music files onto a memory card or the internal memory of the phone. I am a bit of a phone expert (I have over 25 current model phones) so any questions you have, I can probably answer. I currently carry the iPhone 5, HTC One, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S4 Active, LG Optimus G Pro, Nokia Lumia 1020 and BB Z10. (airport security people always freak out when I travel lol)

My son just switched from Galaxy S4 to Iphone 5, as did a bunch of his friends. My niece & nephew have i5 as well.
Galaxy S4 is nice but after awhile they all said Andriod and the S4 is just too complicated and cumbersome. Negatives outweigh positives. Apple may be closed shop but products are simple and always work and rarely if ever crash. |

You can sync Google music with iTunes on your computer and then you can stream Google music with your Android phone. It will be the same as if you were using iTunes.
The S4 will allow you to use it as a hotspot and the iPhone 5 will not. If you download FoxFi you can use the phone as a hotspot for your laptop (if you use one) and you will not have to use open wireless networks.

I like my S3 and in all probability will go with the S4 or whatever is new for Samsung in a year when my contract is up.
I'll admit there is a steep learning curve with the S3, but it's because there is so much on this phone that can be configured and the time it takes to learn all the nuances, to me, is well worth the time and effort. I almost bought an S4 recently online, but the Verizon system was down and the sale wouldn't go through. The next day, I decided that spending $700 on an S4 now probably wouldn't be prudent, as an S5 will probably be out by next year and I'd have to cough up about $300 for that one. All I can say is that the the S4 models I've had the pleasure to poke around on are extremely tempting and I can hardly wait until July 12, 2014. I hope I live that long!

Both are superb, I have had both and prefer the S4.

As for the size, I think that because the S4 is mostly made up of screen, whereas the iPhone has big bezels the Galaxy looks larger than it really is. A photo of my (now sold) iPhone 5 on top of a Samsung Galaxy S3 (Which is larger than the S4)

My wife thinks just like you do. And, she got the iPhone 5 and loves it. I find it very restrictive. She finds it to be bliss. She used to have an Android phone and rarely used it because of all the choices and cool stuff. She uses the iPhone 5 all the time because the operating systems just "works" for her.

I think this sums it up for a lot of people, either the iphone is too restrictive or is bliss. In talking to friends those that are technogeeks like Android for all the possibilities, those that need idiot-proofed technology, including me like Apple.

Given the above, you should just get the iphone. There will be a slight learning curve as it's a different OS. Android's not hard but it does things differently, that's all.

I'm a mega Apple fan. Will never buy another brand computer again, also have had an iphone since they came out except for the 5 because I wanted to give the S3 a try because I like the customization and camera.
Had an S3 my wife dropped it inside it's case while passing it to me inside the house on a wood floor from about waist high. Screen spiderwebbed and never came back on. Ok, that's what we get for not being careful. Though I found it odd I accepted responsibility that we broke the phone. Waited for the S4 to come out and bought it, mainly because the phone has a built in GPS that I can use over seas unlike the iPhone which doesn't have GPS. Well guess what hanging, out on my beach chair by the pool, phone on my lap, decide to reach over and get my book and the damn phone falls. I hadn't got a case for it yet as I waiting for delivery. But guess what, yes it broke. The damn glass cracked in the top right corner, FROM A TWO FOOT DROP, POS! The screen still works, but seriously....this is supposed to be gorilla glass 3 blah blah blah. Sorry, but my opinion is these Samsung phones are a POS. I expect more. I've various iterations of my iPhone 3/3gs/4s(wife's) that I've owned take a bunch of these little accidental drops and come off with nothing(in a case) to just scratches. Speaking on the device itself, I do like some of the features that Samsung offers, though I find it more cumbersome to manage music and photos than the iphone I was willing to overlook these faults and download extra crap to make it work.....NO MORE. It isn't worth it, and now I understand exactly why every reviewer says the phones feel cheap and plasticky, because it is. A fragile, plastic piece of crap and will never buy another one again, ever. Back to iphones I guess. Yeah I'm ranting and you would too if in one year you spent $550-S3 and $650-S4(unlocked international) on two crappy phones that implode on contact. Just sharing my opinion and experience, if you decide to get an S4 get one of those big mongo caveman cases for it too, asap, in fact buy the case first. Good luck. |

I sometimes hide those dings with black Sharpie, but haven't in a while. I do not use any cases because I think it detracts from the form factor and I like to put it in my back pocket opposite my wallet. I just wish it was a little curved like the 3GS. The S4 is probably a superior phone spec. wise but Apple takes care of me and that's what counts. I've only had one Apple Care claim and it was my fault and they gave me a new phone. I had cracked my screen one day (3GS) and then proceeded to spill a daiquiri on it. That killed it good! I was honest with the Apple dude and told him what happened and he came out with a new phone. This is worth the price of admission... In all honesty, I did buy four Mac computers and three Apple TV's from that store and had only that one Apple Care claim. |

I came from owning 3 Blackberries back to back and when the last one malfunctioned I said no more. Got an Iphone 5 and love it. My brother went from iphone to S4. He had previously been with apple for about 4 yrs. He said he had a learning curve, like someone mentioned, you just have to learn to do the same thing in different ways. I have small hands and when I held the S3 of S4 I couldn't hold it properly. Was too big. Plus I most of the time just throw my phone in my pocket (yes, even though I am female and carry a purse all the time). I don't know how you guys carry these large phones, especially after you put a case on them.
No phone is THE one, its just simply the ONE that suits YOUR needs best. The Iphone 5 has a Personal Hotspot. I use it a lot. |

I traded my 3GS for a S3. I really like the integration with google. It set up too easy with mail, contacts, etc. I would never go back to apple for business purposes but I think apple in general puts out a better quality device. I had to put the S3 in a otter case or im sure I would have broke it in the first week

Just left Blackberry (sorry, but the Q10 was horrible), and got the S4 active. I like it. Pretty easy to use, battery life has been outstanding so far. It does have A LOT of different apps and whatever on it...most I don't use, but those aren't that big of a deal, I move those to a seperate page, and put all pertinent stuff on one page. Pretty simple. I downloaded Wondershare, mobilego...or somesthing to transport my contacts from my work computer (outlook) to it...and it was NOT seamless...but it didn't suck. Music from Itunes was a snap too.
I got the "active" because it is waterproof and dustproof (so they say). I've yet to test it out, but in hindsite since I'll be putting a case on it...might as well just have went with the regular S4, put a case on it...and then had the better camera (and little better display). It is a bit bigger than the Iphone (wife has one), but nothing horrible. I actually like the idea of holding it to my head and having the ear port by my ear, and the mic by my mouth. Always felt weird w/the BB having the Mic so far away (yet they could hear me fine). All in all, the S4 is pretty easy to use, not much of a learning curve. A little bit of a headache going from the Blackberry sync (very easy) to syncing the Google phone with a Microsoft (Outlook) product. And for this reason I MAAAAAY go with a windows phone next (nokia Lumia), but who knows. Hoping the active is a little more durable than the regular S4. Still mulling getting the ATT mobile insurance. Figure, worst case scenario in 2 years when my contract is up, it'd cost me the $170 (paid in insurance) and $199 (for the new phone). Yeah, that a $400 phone now....but if I break this one out of warranty or what not...well, now it's a $700 phone (when not available for contract re-up)...and that stings a little.

I recently cast my vote for the Samsung Galaxy Note II. It's essentially an S4 but with a larger 5.5" screen and a multi-use stylus that helps fumble-fingered guys like me be more precise in my screen selections. Also fits easily in front or back pockets.
Versus the iPhone5:

^You put that in a pocket....lol. No way in hell I could pull that off, and I don't do skinny jeans but my S3 in a case was cumbersome and my S4 less so as it was thinner, but stuffing that thing a pocket, naaah bro.

It might be too big for me, but I'm becoming convinced that larger screens are the way of the future. My S3 is really less a phone and more of an information hub.
