It is not safe...
Headed to Bogota, left the blue YM behind since it is not safe to wear that watch in that city. Always be aware of your surroundings, and don't paint a target on your back while you travel!

Yep, lost my submariner in Medellin Colombia last year!
Not even stolen while I was wearing it but rather by the building security when it should have been completely secure! Sorry but you can't trust anyone you don't know. Leave it home!!

You are still yourself without your Rolex. Revel in your health and safety.

Yeah if you don't feel comfortable, leave it at home. Frankly, though, there might be a couple hundred people max in Bogota who would even recognize a YM. They'd rather have your iPhone, Blackberry or iPad. FYI, never hail a cab off the street in Bogota, especially late at night.

No matter what you're wearing, you're always at risk of being mugged. I've seen gold coloured watches for sale and on people all over but that doesn't make it an expensive watch. Unless they are aware of the brand and looking very hard for it, you're at no more risk than if you wore anything else. I believe criminals target victims based more on activity or lifestyle (where they are staying, restaurants, shopping habits) than what they are wearing (although I'm sure it does play a part).
Either way, there are some places you just don't wear anything of value simply because the odds of being victimised are much higher and that is definitely one of them |

Good call...most foreigners stand out enough on their own while travelling, why attract more attention to yourself?

Concur... Personally, i would avoid Columbia all together. But, for business it is sometimes unavoidable. Be safe in your travels!

You probably are at risk of getting robbed anywhere in the world period, it's all about how aware u are and what people u are with at certain places! Oh and it's Colombia.. And please don't see this as me being offensive towards you just that sometimes people talk bad about things that they have never experience their self and most of those times that are wrong. Yes it can be dangerous but all u need is a bit of common sense and not get ur self into the wrong situation.

You are right when it comes to being robbed/mugged anywhere. The best you can do is blend in with the population as much as possible. |

I went with my wife, she is from here and we traveled to quiet a few places there. For a whole month and yes at the beginning I felt like I had to watch out for everyone walking by my but after I few days I realized things were much different, after this I not once felt unsafe nether did my wife and trust me she was terrify of going, she ended up living it and so did I. But hey maybe my experience was different since I was always with well known locals everywhere we went also we where in nicer places most of the time like hotels, restaurants etc.. Yes our history isn't the best but for. What I saw things are changing a lot for the better. Now will I ever go back and live there NO. Maybe vacations again. The US is my home and yes I was born in Colombia but the us is the greatest country in the world and I'm proud to be able to say I live here. By the way what part of Florida are u from?

Last time I wore a Rolex in Bogota I was robbed at gunpoint on a busy intersection in the financial district in broad daylight

My G-Shock is my south of the border work watch...but I will say I really do like Colombia and Medellin is quite delightful and I did not feel unsafe there...but I still leave the fancy watches home when going south. Something about that saying about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure.....

When I was there I bought a cheap, plastic swatch watch. It took me through the entire summer without a glitch. However, I did have friends held up with a lethal weapon. Men and women are made to strip and hand over all valuables. They never get their clothes back. One of my friends, a very head-strong girl, refused to take her clothes off, and after many minutes they let her go with only handing over her jewels. Most are not so lucky.

the cdn gov website is pretty good. the u.s. cia has one too but the cdn one also has a 'crime' dropdown which is quite helpful. apart from the obvious travel precautions, one should always exercise caution in any unfamiliar setting. even a simple wedding band or fancy pair of shoes is worth something to someone. travel safe. |
