Rolex Milgauss GV?

I currently have a steel GMT IIc and a Speedmaster Pro sapphire sandwich on black strap/deployant. I have managed to arrange a one off 15% discount plus free genuine Rolex service off my next watch from an authorised Rolex dealer here in the UK. The problem is I like **loads** of Rolex watches! I have my eye on the Milgauss GV. Do you think this would compliment my admittedly small existing collection? The GMT IIc and Speedy Pro are classics and future proof if I decided to sell them. It could go one of 2 ways with the GV though....either seen as an interesting novelty due to it's styling or too wacky and unappealing due to its styling. For around the £6k mark...$9,300 what other Rolex could be an option? At the moment the GV is the one that 'speaks' to me if you know what I mean. Thanks.

I think it would compliment your collection and I think you will love it. It is one of the very nicest of the newer Rolex...good luck!

And this is where we draw the line on our similar tastes!

With me not being the biggest fan of the Milgauss, I might be able to give you the other side of the story without prejudice or blind bias. The style of the Gauss is long debated as being very retro and while you might love it now, can you see yourself still loving it in 5 years? Also remember that with that cage built in it's a lot thicker and heavier than it looks in pictures, make sure you spend some time with it on at the AD before you go ahead. If you still love it after that, you know you've made the right choice

A more conservative option might be the Explorer 1 which has similar size but much more laid back look. Other than that, all I can think of is a DJ2 which has quite a few dial options but is sorely missing the Jubilee strap of the 36mm DJ which gives it that extra bit of flash and style.

Either way, take you time and enjoy the experience!

Although I disagree with this statement, I do like the GV

Looking at the second hand prices they have been fetching for the past 50/60 years they have proved future proof so far in relative terms.

I love my GV it's the one that brought me back to Rolex and I think it's the most unique special creation by Rolex with the green glass ..love it! I also feel that the GV is the most under appreciated model in the Rolex line up.. Wait till they discontinue this model n see what happens ;)

Well I think it will compliment your collection nicely. The only question would be if the novelty aspect wore off or not...if it does you can always flip it.

I think the GV would go great with what you have. I love the Milgauss. It's a beautiful watch.

Are you buying a watch or gauging an investment? - from the sound of it, you are concerned about Future Value.

The GV is a fine watch if you need the anti-magnetic functionality - otherwise the Milgauss and green crystal isn't worth the extra cost IMHO.

I'd go with a new Expl.II 42mm Polar edition

Thank you for your comments everybody. The DJ, DJ2 and Explorer 1 that were suggested as alternatives, although fine watches, do not feel special to me like the Milgauss GV does. The Explorer II was also suggested but I had this dilemma before and picked my GMT IIc steel in preference.

I appreciate the Milgauss GV hasn't been that popular. The Rolex dealer was honest and said that is why they can give me a fairly generous discount on it. However I like the contradiction of the watch. The individual parts are a bit wacky...the orange lightning bolt second hand, the green glass, the different coloured lume and indices. However these parts together produce a very elegant result - something of a paradox. I like that.

I agree with you entirely and it is for exactly these same reasons that I bought my white dial Milgauss. You clearly have you're mind set on it so don't delay. There's no question Milgauss models will become sought after watches in the future due to their general lack of popularity now. A view we both share and I believe one to be quite true. All the best, AM.

well stated - you are clearly a man with an artful eye and keen sense of style - a milgauss gv at that price is an impeccable choice. If you get this watch know that you have made the right decision.

I posted on another thread moments ago that the gv was the most likely to be discontinued by rolex due to some of the very reasons you stated - I really have no idea - but I know this- I will only be about two months behind you in the purchase of this watch......If they do drop it after that -all the better.

I've said it before: When you consider all that is going on with the GV (dial + crystal), and yet is does not overwhelm or seem over-crowded (like the too-busy Daytona), it is a marvel.

I could do without the big, thick case, but that is another discussion.

The GV is a beautiful timepiece. I say go for it.

Fan or not, the Milgauss has a pretty cool history.

On a side note, if you can find one, take a look at some of the vintage Milgauss pieces. They sure do hold their value and more.

I think the GV is great, sits perfect on the wrist (my wrist) perfect size, different and unique and with some history behind it.

Just sold mine, had lost the papers and box. I´m going to get another one in the future with full set and pass on to my son.

UK sellers that can beat 15% off retail brand new? I wouldn't consider an import. Too complicated.
