Icon4 Submariner 5510/6200 from 1953

Hi there,

got a Submariner 5510 from 1953. (Probably a 6200)

The watch was part of the famous Moana expedition from June 1953 to July 1956.

In the Moana sea expedition it withstood in excess of a thousand dives and was worn by Bernard Gorsky himself!

It came to us by a big chance in 1959 and was used since then for daily diving.

Since about a year it does not work anymore.

Now we are looking for a collector who recognizes the value of this masterpiece.

Next WE I will try to get better pics in daylight.

Collectors and good advise welcome, all others enjoy the pics.

Zerojanvier.

Fantastic, storied watch. Somebody should write its history with the context around it!

Wasn't it a 6200 in 1953? The 5510 was produced in the late 50's.

Ed's right. The 5510 came out in '58 according to Skeet and Urul. If 1953 it must be a 6200.

You might be right. As we got it in '59 it was accompagnied by a small brochure of the 5510. (But then it was already 6 years old, as the expedition started in 53)

Due to the intensive use, the model number on the side is unreadable. Any idea how to find out more?

The model number should be visible inside the case back if you take it off. Don't do this yourself for fear of scratchng the case back and only use someone Rolex trained. If it's a 6200 it should have an A296 movement. It could also be a 6538 big crown which should have a 1030 movement if the date of aquisition is wrong. If it is a 5510 it should have a 1530 movement in it.

In 1958 the 6200 was fitted with the 1530 movement and indeed it was re-numbered as the 5510 with gold printed dial
Also in 1958 the 6536 appears with depth rating printed in white and the later style Mercedes hands as well as the 1030 movement.
Please observe the different triangles and the slightly elongated minute marks in the bezel insert.

Some more details:

"Rolex Oyster Perpetual" and the depth rating (200m 660 ft) is printed in white.

The triangle at 60 is silver.

The minute marks on the bezel insert are short.

The crown wheel is big as on your 5510 pic and "BREVET" is printed large on it.

How can anyone not be completely in love with the early Subs? They might be the best lookers ever made.

That is my problem, I have no idea what this vintage could be worth.

That is why I'm here to get as much info and good advice from some real Rolex friends.

Can anybode help me to evaluate the value of this Sub?

Interesting watch..Probably needs more research etc..

It is unlikely it was used in the Expedition cited as the early 6200's used the 3,6,9, Explorer dial.

Your piece is more than likely from 1958 or so as that's about when the 5510 appeared and the Brevet large crown.., but without numbers, movement info and some paper link it might be impossible to tell what is original and what is not..

But, I'm a duffer, you need a professional for proper evaluation..

I gonna ask a watchmaker to open it... gonna post the pic's and get a scan of the letters which came from Rolex along with the watch - then let's see what you (all) think.

CU on Sunday ...

I could pay 4.000 if dazzled...lol, actually I would have paid 8.000 if it had the red triangle at the 12 of the insert, the gold dial, the fixed spring bars made especially for the UK and CDN navy. I think the dial is from a different model, the bezel insert as well (all 6538's had red) as well, please look the difference in patina of the dial and the hands. By the way the ones made for the navy had 3-6-9 hour markers with Arabic numerals and most importantly that the numbers all match with a confirmation letter from Rolex.
