We all know the nicknames, Hulk, Smurf, Batman, Bluesy etc.

They Are, as it seems, a little controverial here at TRF.

Some claim using them make you seem immature, lack of respect for the brand and that AD's would laugh if you brought them up.

Myself, I don't have strong opinions on the matter, I'll not judge people on what they call their watches :)

If you don't like 'em don't use 'em isy take :)

I was quite amused though, by this article in Watch Time.

Once you understand the ref numbers, I just don't see the need for nicknames. It's pretty self-explanatory.

what definitely was pretty ridiculous with the new GMT was the mad rush to be the one to come up with "the" nickname....

as for nicknames themselves, whatever floats your boat (other than "rollie"...that should be grounds for immediate TRF banning.

For me it all depends on the watch. For example, from time to time i tend to call my yellow dial Tag F1 chrono "The Lemon." Its fun every once and a while.

I would most certainly doubt if Rolex themselves mentioned anything about these nick-names myself cannot stand them.And would doubt if anyone would go into a AD and ask for a bluesey,batman or any of the other IMHO rather childlike names.

No Rolex dealer will try to sell the Rolex image and then say, Would you like to see the "Hulk" or "Smurf"??? I like the stately image of Rolex. It isnt flashy but it is classy, constant and secure.
I know the nicknames are a way to take out the "old man" stuffy image of Rolex but it doesnt work and to me seems like a desperate juvenile attempt to go against the grain.
I dont like the nicknames. Its not my style at all.

The only nicknames I've liked are Paul Newman Daytona, and Bond Submariner. The names are cool, and one immediately knows what is being discussed.

The recent nicknames have been a bit silly, and I can't imagine Rolex referencing "Bruiser" in any interview, and I'd be a bit embarrassed to go into an AD and ask to see one, using that name. The rest of the nicknames aren't much better.

Nicknames among WIS is acceptable being that you will be understood for the most part. Any where else, in the wild or at an AD, you not be understood. You would instantly be looked at as a fool, with no creditability.

I'm fine with them and they help me place what watch someone is referring to immediately.

The only thing I can't stand is when someone refers to any Rolex as a "beater watch." I know it's a TRF colloquialism, but these pieces are way too expensive and beautiful to be referred to as a "beater."
