Purchase a Rolex watch in installments?

I live in a small village in Switzerland, but I did not know the new owners of the Rolex AD. I went in there, introduced myself, and asked him if I could pay for a SS DJ 36mm in 10 installments...he agreed!
Yes, my family is pretty known here, but I really doubted this man would ever agree to doing that...I was out of the store with a new Rolex in less than 30 minutes! So happy!

"Installment deal"??

Okay, so the deal is like this:

1st. month you get the bracelet.

2nd. month you get bezel.

3rd. month you get the crown.

4th. month you get crystal.

5th. month you get the hour hand.

6th. month you get the minute hand.

7th. month you get second's hand.

8th. month you get the dial.

9th. month you get the movement.

And in the 10th. month you get the watch case itself. Then every part is installed to get you the whole watch.

That's great Wish they accepted the same thing here . Here most of the AD's accept only cash and credit. You should have a good friendship with the AD in order to offer you month installments

Congrats on your new watch!

You live in a beautiful country that I have had the pleasure of visiting many times.

Welcome and enjoy your watch.
The deal is not that uncommon in the UK, and it also shows that the AD have to move with the times in order to sell their watches. Every jeweller is doing 0% on most high end stock.

There was a time 30-40 years ago that business here was done on a handshake like that. I also grew up in a small town as well. My father owned a new car dealership and many times he told me stories about how they did business like that. One farmer I remember in particular came in to buy a car in the spring. All his money was tied up in his crops so he asked my father if he could pay for the car when he harvested them. "No problem" my father said and handed him the keys. Can you imagine anyone doing that today? It's nice to know that there are still places that do business like your AD. Enjoy your new watch and wear it well.

Several sources in the states allow for one year zero interest in the states.

I always figured jewelry was one of the things that you should buy outright. Seems sort of silly to make payments on it...

Anytime you can get deferred payments at no interest, take it--no questions.

Example: $6k watch, 10 equal payments, 0% interest. Put your 6k in the highest interest rate savings account you can find (4-5%). Make a $600 payment every month towards the watch. At the end of 10 months, the watch will be paid off and you'll have about $120 in the account. That's a free steak dinner and a nice bottle of wine while you enjoy your new and paid for watch!!

Even if you have more money than you can spend and don't care to have any more (like some folks on the forum apparently do), you can toss that $120 in the collection plate next Sunday.

If you get 0% interest, why not? As long as it's not in lieu of a discount, I say go for it.

The one time an AD did bring that option to my attention, they offered an equivalent discount to offset the amount that would have been earned by moving around the money.

Of course, if you're choosing between 0% interest and a discount, take the discount.

I agree on the 0% interest deal. I was offered either a discount or the 0% interest for 12 months. If you have the funds, then the discount just has to be bigger than the interest you could get by putting your money into a savings account like Kevin suggested. Makes sense to me.

The Big T must. The manager of the Pentagon City store mentioned that they had a highly sough after VC tied up in lay away for over 18 months. Said he wanted to terminate the deal and refund the money but wasn't allowed to do so.

I hate to be the only one to say this but buying with cash and actually owning the watch when leaving the store is option #1 for me.

Regardless of how you pay for it, enjoy it.

BTW my last trip to Europe took me through Austria but my heart was set on Switzerland, maybe next time.

I'm actually thinking about doing this. Since the watch is a gift, it's not like I need to have possession of it. I was thinking that this might be a way for me to lock down a price now in case there's a price increase, without having to pay for it all at once.

You know what?
I am gonna change my tune, if a price increase is looming in Switzerland I would have done the installment plan too.

Nothing wrong with installments if the interest you have to pay (ideally 0) is less than the interest your money is making you..
