I don't agree that is China a third world country, but lesson learned nonetheless. Traveling to almost any unfamiliar area, domestic or foreign, carries risk.

Wonder if the way he was treated by authorities had something to do with the fact he was Taiwanese, or is that SOP to require giving a police report before an injured victim is allowed medical treatment?

I've got to hand it to him. It was a fool proof plan. I'm not pointing any fingers at his nationality. Just hacking around is all ......

Obviously no one is READING the second link...

Cliff notes: It was determined that the watch was NOT stolen and the guy cut HIS OWN HAND OFF to possibly defraud the insurance company. It was his own knife that cut his hand off and they found anesthetic in his blood.

In most instances China is a third world country. Please don't be fooled by the modern mega cites like Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Guangzhou.... Underneath all the ostentatious show of wealth, there is still extreme poverty...

If you're a robber wouldn't it be much easier if you rob the guy the old fashioned way instead of chopping his hand off? This story smell fishy to me.

X2.....I don't believe a word of it. I think this news agency is like "The Onion"... Read the story again, the words and wording give it away. A legit news agency isn't going to use the phrase "ticked off".. Just my opinion.....

Hands getting chopped off for Rolexes and gold bracelets, fingers getting chopped off for rings ... Unfortunately are not uncommon in Asia.

Seriously, I agree, out of 3 billion plus people I doubt the victims of this crime add up to more than a handful... Oops! Poor choice of words....

My recommendation is for all those who are skeptical is to wear your solid gold Rolexes when touring the countryside in countries like China.

Unfortunately life outside the first world can be brutal and shocking at times. Life is cheaper there. Heard of women getting their heads smashed in with motorcycle helmets by motorcycle snatch thieves riding by just to steal their Coach handbags? We are talking about Coach, not LV or Hermes... Better to be safe than sorry.
