16710 still a viable option for daily BEATER?

Greetings all,

I currently own a 116710 which I love but the Rolex bug has been gnawing at me the past few months and I'm really leaning towards getting a 16710 preferably with lug holes. One of the main reasons I want to get a 16710, aside from the timeless classic design of the GMT, is because it is lighter and slightly smaller. I have a really thin wrist and while the 116710 is mostly a good fit, it's still kind of heavy and wears on my wrist throughout the day.

My question is would it still be a viable option for a daily beater given that most of the 16710s are quite old now? I know the reliability of a Rolex has been address many times on this forum but I wanted to ask specifically about buying a 16710 as a daily beater instead of a collector's item. thank you all in advanced for your time.

I think that in a watches life-span, a decade old is still relatively young..

For the most part, it's the same exact watch that is on your wrist now...except it's better designed IMHO! And yes, I do own a 116710 and still prefer the 16710. You have 3 easily interchangeable bezel inserts and countless bracelet & strap options. When searching for a 16710 there is a span that you have both the SEL and the lug holes, I would start my search there. Good luck and have fun.

The 16710 is easily a daily and can handle anything.
Slightly slimmer and lighter too, but just as rugged.

You'll love it. After wearing my SD for a month then swapping out for a few moments, it felt as light as a feather. Pepsi all the way!!!!!

It's an iconic Rolex, you'd love having it on your wrist.

A 10 year old 16710 is still a teenager, my beater is a 28 (almost 29) years old Submariner. Just keep it services and it will last beyond you. It could only be destroyed by means of serious abuse, but so would your 116710.

In addition, my take is that the 16710 will outlive the 116710 in terms of desirability as it is very close to earlier versions of the GMT Master. I might be wrong, and only time will tell.

I predict 116710 will become your "beater" and 16710 will be more special occasion.

16710 is a great and really durable watch, mine is 15 years old. The above comment will undoubtedly be true if you get one......

Definitely a 16710 fits more as a daily wearer than a collectible. Whether you want it to serve as a beater or not is entirely up to how particular you are about your watches. I think of a beater as something I wouldn't be bothered by if it bashed up against a rock and got significantly damaged during the course of use. Of course you may be referring to a beater as a daily wear watch.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I guess I get a little nervous when I'm looking around and see the watch is circa 1990.

One of the issues I'm having with the 116710 is the weight. I hear the 16710 is significantly lighter. I've never seen any of the older model Rolex's anywhere so I'm not sure if the weight difference is exaggerated or not.

I've been debating this. What will happen to the current Rolex line if and when the "big watch" trend passes...

That's a bit of a problem and the reason I posted this thread. I'm kind of a one watch person so I don't see myself having both Models and wearing one on the weekend... At least I'm saying that now. I guess my question should have been more along the lines of how will it hold up as a daily watch if I sold my 116710.

I agree. I guess I meant a daily wear watch.

In that case 16710 is a great daily wearer, nice manageable size and weight, and it can definitely take the minor knocks of daily life.

I'll never understand why anybody would consider any Rolex a "beater".

I wear it as a daily wearer, but I never refer to mine as a beater.

Your instinct is correct. The 16710 would be comfortable, lighter, and fun because you can change it up with three bezel inserts. Happy hunting!

What is a " beater"?
What does that mean?

Circa 1990? My daily is Circa 1967 and it laughs at my puny adventures. Its cousins have went to the moon, broken the sound barrier and survived revolutions. You are in good hands

I should have chosen my words more carefully. When I say beater what I really mean is a watch that can stand the abuses of daily wear. I may tend to be a little harder on my watches than most so maybe that's why I call it a beater.

I think everyone knows what you meant by daily beater pretty common WIS phrase (I did anyway and I did not ridiculously envision cruel and unusual "watch abuse")

Get a 2001/2 k series GMT. SEL, lug holes, bezel choices, looks great on oyster or jubilee, and is all around a wonderful watch. Here's some encouragement.

Well here's another photo for you. Mine is sized for a 6.5" wrist and unless your wrist is smaller than 6" you shouldn't have to remove a permanent link.

90's is not very old IMHO for a Rolex. It can take daily wear no problem.
