Trying to Surprise my husband with a GMT, but not sure how to know who to trust..
Hi all,
As my title says. My husband just got a promotion at work and I went back to work after staying home with my kids for 7 years. I'm getting my first commision check in January and I want to spend the first money I make on the man who supported our family solely for 7 years without every complaining or making me feel badly. So, I know what he really wants is the GMT II black/blue dial, but would take the plain black dial as well. I have read comments about dealers on this forum but how do I know I can trust then to be a reputable business? Thanks for helping out this newbie. Alexis |

Congrats to your husband and kudos to you for using your first check in 7 years to show him appreciation - it's obviously a 2-way street in your family!! Surely he also appreciates how much you've done in 7 years with the kids, so maybe your next check should go towards YOUR Rolex...just a thought! |

For someone who is venturing in the world of watches without any prior knowledge, I recommend an established, first rate jeweler/AD in your area. If you have dealt with one previously for jewelry and other business, so much the better. A good AD will provide you with information on the product, you can visit and handle the merchandise repeatedly before you decide, they can reliably service the watch over time, and you can be confident of your purchase. Check on the AD's in your area, see if friends have had any experiences and go from there. It might cost you a few dollars more, but for an initial purchase, and to commemorate such an occasion, that is the way I'd go.

Hi, if your husband really wants the blue/black GMT then don't settle for the all black. Good luck in your search.

Get the blue/black. Plain black is, well, too plain.
For that watch, there may not be that much difference between buying from a rolex authorized dealer vs a trustees seller here. |

I would do a search around the Buyer's Seller's section on TRF and buy from one you feel confident with.
https://www.rolexforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=28 There are a few not too far from you, so a face to face deal could be possible if you feel comfortable. Chances are you could get a his name on the warranty card if that's important to him. If you buy one from a seller out of state, that's the sales tax you save on top of their already good price. I've done three deals on TRF with two different sellers. Both guys are smooth as butter and perfect gentlemen. Your husband already knows what model he wants so there's no reason to go to an AD IMO. He will still have a two year warranty if you purchase from a seller on TRF as the warranty follows the watch. When the time comes to service the watch, it won't make a difference if you bought it from a seller on TRF or an AD. As long as the way you choose has a Rolex parts account. Matter of fact, I think there's an independent Rolex Service Center in San Francisco also. Good luck

I would also recommend using an AD in this situation. Maybe set it up so you happen by the store one day and unleash the surprise. One small benefit is that you would be able to have it sized proprely right away and the rep can tell your husband about the watch.
Obviously you could save money elsewhere if you are Rolex-savvy. FWIW, I bought my 1 and only at the AD and consider myself a little bit savvy. |

The trusted TRF guys in Cali are top notch.
You didn't mention if pre-owned is an option but you will save more $$$ if it is.

I've always advised that the first Rolex should be from an AD. You pay more but you have peace of mind and, if there are any issues, you can always go to the AD for service instead of going through the mail. That being said, different AD's give different levels of service, I would look for one in your area that has an in house jeweller or watch repair. Hope this helps.

I would make sure you know which one he wants, all black GMT or the newer Black/Blue.
Take him into a Rolex Authorized Dealer and have him try them on.... I must say, you are a saint....!

Welcome to the forum! What a great gift for your husband. As many have mentioned, DavidSW is a top notch guy. There are many other well respected sellers here, call & talk with a few and go with who you are most comfortable with.

I would make sure the warranty card is not named if going grey market. IMHO nothing worse than receiving a beautiful gift like a Rolex with somebody else's name on it. If buying for yourself, than another story...

With AD you van use your credit card and return within 7 days or exchange on the spot. If you ship out of state you should be able to avoid taxes on it.

Trying to Surprise my husband with a GMT, but not sure how to know who to tru...
Wow! Amazing gesture! Your husband is a lucky man.
I was just at Davidson & Licht Valley Fair yesterday. They can order you one but the wait time may be awhile for the Blue/Black GMTIIC. Here's a picture of one they had in stock but it's already sold. You can also try Shreve's in the Stanford Shopping Mall - ask for Stacy May, the other reps are okay. Kern's in Burlingame - Ann is the GM or Eric the owner. At D&L in SJ - the owner Josh will help you out. A TRF seller here will have great references and you can save on tax and a small discount. |

When I ventured into the world of Rolex I used the TRF community and local ADs to learn as much as possible as well as narrow my choice down and price range. Once that was established it was just a matter of finishing the research to buy from a trusted seller here on TRF. Which was DavidSW. The experience has been perfect.
