First Rolex - 116610 or 116622 bl

Hello everyone,

My name is Fadi and I am a small business owner. Looking to buy my first luxury timepiece and I've done quite a bit of research these last few months and decided it should be a Rolex (life's short, right?).

I've narrowed it down to the Submariner (Ceramic) 116610 versus the Yachtmaster Blue Dial. Both have the parachrom oscillator (zirconium, niobium & oxygen alloy). I would definitely appreciate some input, but here is my train of thought...

Both watches seem very similar except for the bezels. The Sub is ceramic, but how durable is it? It seems like people are a bit edgy in regards to the ceramic. Also, the Yachtmaster is a way different color dial and bezel. From an engineering standpoint, the bi-directional Yacht bezel kind of irks me. The Sub is unidirectional, making it a more qualified diver's watch. I do like the platinum bezel on the Yachtmaster, but would I be able to wear it for 20-30 years? I'm looking for something I can wear every day and for a very long time.

The price difference is at least a couple grand between the pre-owned (3k for AD retail). I've mulled this decision over and over and I've come to the conclusion that my head feels like this:

my vote would be the sub, but you cannot go wrong with either choice. Both will bring you many many years of enjoyment with proper care and maintenance. Haven't heard about many issues with the ceramic bezels, but have heard they can be costly to replace when compared to the older bezels.

not as costly as a YM bezel. however of course a YM bezel can be refurbished within service.

It depends what you want.

The sub is a classic look that Rolex made 50 years ago, and will make 50 years from now. The blue yachtmaster is a very modern piece.

Both are gorgeous, just depends if you want classic or modern.

Either watch you pick will be a fine choice but for myself I would probably go with the classic submariner.

The Sub is a classic and there are many items today made with ceramic.. In some cases the entire watch case or bracelet (Rado, Longines, Fossil, Citizen, etc.) is made of ceramic and so barring a severe accident it is as durable as the Yachtmaster..

The Yachtmaster is not a diver's watch, so the bezel is bi-directional and it is water rated for only 100 meters vs. 300 meters for the Sub.

The bracelets are slightly different at the clasp. Beyond that the watches are pretty much the same and either would certainly last 20-30 years.. The Yachtmaster has been around for 20 years and many are still like new..

These two watches offer a different look for different tastes, that's all. Pick the one that you want to put on your wrist every morning and not what a bunch of Forum members quibble about.......

Sub - Follow the herd and have a great watch but be prepared to see every other man and his wife wearing one.

YM - A lot more rare in the wild, stunning bezel and elegant case design which is probably water resistant to 300m as well, so this would be my choice.

These are currently my two fav steel Rolexes. I think you will end up with both so get the more expensive YM first, it will make getting the subc easier in the future.

i think different way. Get Sub C first, then saving and waiting for the price of blue YM softer a lil bit more??? To me, Both of them can easily get in anytime. End up you will have both of them at the great deals.

I agree if you plan to get both, but as the OP only wants to get one right now then it will be easier for us to persuade him as we like to do to get the other if the price is less.

The SubC first, and then the YM blue dial down the road, for variety. Both are great watches, imho.

The two watches are beautiful. I have a Sub. ceramic almost new and I love it but when the warranty expires in January 2014 possibly change for a YM blue or platinum dial. I can afford both.

Do you know in all my time here Ive never heard of the idea of selling a watch just when the warranty expires. Surprising actually.

Welcome to TRF and the wonderful world of Rolex decisions.

You can't go wrong either way. Looking at durability, chances are the sub bezel is going to hold up better to normal daily wear than the YM, barring a freakish accident. The ceramic is going to be more scratch resistant than the platinum.

I wouldn't base my sole decision on that, however. Try them on back to back, close your eyes and see what you picture yourself wearing 20 years down the road. Go with it.

Welcome to the forum. For everyday I would go Sub, but that's because the PCL of the Yachtmaster are a bit too flash for me. I love the YM and will probably own the blue dial some day. The sub is so versatile and classic. Which does your heart tell you to go with?

You sure can not go wrong purchasing and wearing either of the two Models you are debating between buying...both will last you a Lifetime and bring you many years of enjoyment.....

And as for asking "The Question" here.....all we are going to do is enable you in your decision process. So ask yourself, "can I live with a Blue Dial" Yachtmaster which seems to be the "In Dial" this year or the Black Dial Sub(or you can always buy the Blue dial and Blue Bezel Insert). Go with your first impression on each when they were on your wrist...and don't second guess yourself!!!

Choice between a steel sub or the new YM, is easy for me. Definitely the new YM.
I have a Sub, but its a ceramic two tone, I prefer the two tone over the new YM.
It still is a stunning piece and somewhat rare in the wild. The normal sub is almost a normal watch at a certain level of society, the YM is not.
