Fiat agrees to buy up rest of Chrysler
This is all news to me, as I didn't know that Fiat had any stake in Chrysler at all.
I've never been a fan of Chrysler products and that goes back to my earliest days when my grandfather was a Dodge man. It seems that everyone who has gotten involved with Chrysler in the past has taken a real beating, including Maserati and Daimler. Oh well, maybe it will work. No it's still the big 3 and ford didn't take a dime of bailout.
I have more respect for Chrysler then government motors. Just incase we didnt all forget, GM still owes uncle sam 10 billion for bailouts that they flat out openly admitted they arent paying back, just before they announced they are moving 70% of manufacturing to CHINA. |

Difficult to think of a 1970 Dodge Charger's designs now being owned by Fiat. I remember the ad's…"Join the Dodge Rebellion". And need I say…'Hemi".

Chrysler had an established distribution presence in Australia from 1935, although Chrysler Australia was not formed until 1951. It became one of the "Big 3" with GM (Holden) and Ford (Falcon) in 1962 when it began selling the Valiant line against the other two. The first 'Valiant' looked like this.
The Valiant was considered a bit 'upmarket' of the Holden and Falcon and had more power. The AP 5 & 6 followed in the early '60s and were good looking cars. The 'sporty' Pacer of 1970 was a hit with the 'boy racers'. The models that came after were increasingly 'old-fashioned' and handled very poorly although they had good engines that had the edge on the other two. They were diabolical on the dirt roads in the outback and roll-overs were common. The Charger (released in '71) was a very successful model and many have been restored and maintained. They were also raced successfully against the Holdens and Fords of the era. With the exception of the Pacer and Charger, Valiants were mainly pitched as American-style cruisers with a bit more luxury than the Holdens or Falcons. Australian roads bore no resemblance whatever to the USA and the Valiant's reluctance to go round rough, pot-holed off-camber single lane roads meant that their reputation suffered. By the late '70s nobody wanted to be seen in a Valiant and resale values were poor. I drove a Mate's '70 model in the day, and still remember the horrendous handling and see-saw steering.

Fiat have been one of the major success stories of the last 10 years, going from being government owned and funded to a growth driver in European autos. Just what they see in Chrysler is hard to tell. If Mercedes could not help them not sure Fiat will. The US still loves their trucks, so there may be some diesel cross over competence to be shared, and a US mini SUV truck may share a platform with a Euro Monster 4WD Fiat.

I hope they won't have fiat engines. I actually like Fiat contemporary designs. I have owned a Chrysler as a teenager and stayed with me for 8 years until I sold it when it was running good.

Lancia has a current range of five models, three of them are rebadged Chryslers... Makes me wonder what is next, but it can't be all good.
