Patek P. Calatrava date WG vs. Rolex SS daytona
Hello, guys....
Which one is the best one in a watchmaker's / watch lover's point of view? I like both... The Patek P. C. is timeless and simple in a very complex way....that's what I find it special and eternal. The Daytona is nice and complex in a very simple way....that's what I find it outstanding and desirable. What do you think, my watch friends???

It's like comparing oranges to apples.
Both are "the best" in their own right. But the Patek movt. might be more refined, but is not as sturdily made as the Rolex movt. So if you want to use the watch for everyday use, go for the Rolex. It can take much more abuse than the Patek.

I think they both deserve to be in a collection! not one or the other, get one and then get the other!

could there be two more different watches??
It is nearly impossible to get a good A vs B type comparo on the watches you mention. The patek is a hand built and hand finished dress watch and the daytona is a tank! Think ferrari (patek) vs porsche(rolex). Both are amazing for what they are, but one is stamped on an assembly line just like a chevy and the other is hand built by a small team of technicians. If you are into aesthetics, the patek is the choice, given that it has finishing standards for its movt. that are on a different planet than the rolex. It is awarded the geneva seal (look it up) and is made by a company that makes the same amount of watches in a year that rolex makes by lunchtime. That being said, if you are remotely sporty in lifestyle, the patek won't make it long. I have a nice SS patek 5085 and it has been back for service a few times and is simply not robust. It sure is a delight to look at and is more accurate than my rolexes.(by a hair at least!) and, If you take a jewelers loupe to the patek, you can actually see the hand beveling on the weights that regulate the balance! Amazing work.. BUt, It is hard to beat a rolex for day to day wear. Sure they are robotically made and have almost no finishing on the movement, but I could care less. They are reasonably priced, unlike patek, which thinks that entry-level should be $25,000!!! Yikes!

Apples and oranges is right. I would say the Patek is the Rolls or Bentley, and the Daytona is the Hummer. Different purposes altogether.

I agree with the apples and oranges comparison. But, from a watch lovers point of view, I'd go with the Patek

Very different watches, but I'd choose the Daytona simply because I favor large, steel watches.
If Patek would come out with this Calatrava in 38mm, then I might reconsider:

who knows? the Patek Calatreva with a sweep hand is likely one of the finest watches ever made. However, Rolex makes some gorgeous watches too, that are more durable, like the President Day/Date, white or champagne dial. The Daytona is a sports watch, and although I don't like chronographs because they are bulky(three buttons, sometimes more), I gotta go with Ernest Hemingway's watch: classy just like him(when he wasn't abusing women, that is).

They are so different the Calatrava is a really beautiful and simple design.
The Daytona with all the dials is different, they are really in different leagues. This is my 5127R. Display back is really cool too!

Simply amazing! This is one of my dream watches. Now I wish that by the time I can actually afford one, Patek will release a 38mm version

Look at the date window, what the little black line above 2 is? Is that the bottom line of the date number 29?

PP makes some attractive watches...the Calatrava isn't among them.
Concur with others that the comparison is impossible to make. Different in every respect other than two hands generally tell the time. |

I know it's a matter of taste, but what exactly don't you like about the Calatrava 5127R shown above? IMHO, it's a very classic watch. What's not to like?

Daytona.
The patek pictured has the date that is misaligned. Not very encouraging.

It's not really misaligned I was playing with it setting the time before taking pictures. I noticed that on that picture but the watch isn't like that, just that picture. It's a fine watch.

I had a Patek 5107R a few yrs ago..now discontinued..Peraps the most beautiful Calatrava ever, but to me, watches look good the more they look like Rolexes..The oyster case is simply non-pareil.

Agreed 100%. The best looking Calatrava models have an Oyster-ish case.

I would have to go with the Daytona. Great feel on the wrist, rugged and a fairly good priced timepiece. The white dial just just jumps out at you. Good luck on your decision.

Unfair to compare these two great watches.
Each will do for me.

Ernest Hemingway
Uncle Sallie,
How do you know what kind of watch Ernest Hemingway had? Do you have a picture of it or something? I'd love to see Papa with a Patek on his wrist! |

A watchmaker of course will like the PP. I do not care for MOST PP's especially the calatrava. A buddy of mine has the new plat chrono that PP came out with and it is nice. I would easily choose the WG Daytona.
