Is a Datejust practical?

I'm planning to change my GMT2c for a Datejust (SS with Jubilee bracelet, fluted Bezel, Roman numerals)
I like the idea of something a bit more 'classic' Rolex.
My wife has 34mm DJ with a Jubilee Bracelet and Roman numerals and every time I see it it looks so goddam shiny, new and Rolex-y compared to the GMT.

I'm struggling a little to sell the GMT in the UK, but when I do I'll try the white and blue dials and make a decision. I hope I don't regret it.

Anyway.... my question to you all is; Can I realistically use a DJ every day like I do with the GMT? Is it practical?

Yes, very, but if the fluted is too blingy for you, then maybe a smooth bezel or an Aqua Terra esp if you like blue as the Skyfall blue is gorgeous.

Most practical of any Rolex IMHO, dress, sports and on a Jubilee the most comfortable Rolex of the lot.

They haven't been in existence for nigh on 50 years because they're impractical...

Hahahah depending on the thread this could go as
GMT II ceramic is "The" Rolex or a DJ?

I am not sure. Practical? Three time zones. Humm.

I am not sure the substitute each other. That is why I have both.

I'd love to be able to have both. Sadly that's not an option

The 36mm DJ is the all-time classic.

You can't really get any more versatile than that.

Fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet... Wonderful every day wearer in my mind. I'd say go for it.

Sure, classic watch. White dial may be more "practical" for everyday use since it will look nice with everything.

Just got to find someone to give me a respectable price for my GMT now :-/
The online buyers don't seem keen to respond, and the AD's offer for PX was insulting.

Practical, yes. Replace the GMTII..... Not sure about that.
The important thing is, get what you like better. Try it out first, make decision later.

Andy, for some (most?) of us, our favorite Rolex changes after a while. Well heeled members just buy a new one. Those of us that stretch to put a Rolex on our wrist have to flip one to acquire a new one. Don't worry, yours will sell. When it does, you will be able to put another Rolex on your wrist. I'm keen to get a classic Tudor Chrono, but need my Turn-O-Graph to sell before I do so. I second all the comments that the 36mm Oyster case is an all-time classic. My next Rolex will be a yellow gold President. That will take an outstanding year for the business. Hopefully 2014 is that year!

Andy, I have been into Rolex watch world for about a year, and my tastes have changed multiple times during that year (I largely blame this forum for that)!

My 36mm TT DJ on jubilee with a fluted bezel was my daily wearer for about 8 months. It goes with everything, and super comfortable. I am selling it now, and DJ2 is now my current daily watch. Either one will work for you.

I love my DJII with fluted bezel. It's definitely more blingy than my Sub or ExpII. The real question is why do you want to change. Is it all about the bling or do you just not use the GMT functions. A lot of people I've talked to who own multiple function watches hardly if ever actually use the functions on a regular basis. It's really about the look not the functions for them. If you don't use the GMT functions and like the DJ looks more then it's a good decision.

DJ is practical, but not as practical as the GMTIIc which has capabilities of three time zones, rotating bezel to time things/events, and use as a compass.
I would keep the GMT and save for a DJ. That would give you time to think about it.

How do you use the GMT as a compass?

Wow a compass!!!!! This is new. I got to have another closer look at the GMT for my next watch. I'm aways getting lost. There's no doubt the GMT has some great functions but that doesn't make it more practical especially if you don't use the functions.

Absolutely classic IMO. As far as practicality, the only drawback is lack of tracking multiple time zones as the GMT can do.
