How long before a 2nd hand watch begins to feel like your own?

Hi All

I recently replaced a 39mm Explorer, which I unfortunately had to sell last year, with a 2nd hand one. Interestingly, for the first few days of wearing the replacement it just didn't feel like my watch. It's like it held residual vibes/energy/chi from the previous owner.

Can you relate to that? Or do I need to get out more? :-)

(this still makes me smile)

As soon as the enter key rebounds on my keyboard when doing the bank wire.

Edit: Just saw your picture thingy(can't remember the name right now) and then the "chi/energy/feng shui" makes sense.......you need to get out more.

It feels especially mine after coming back from a service at RSC, which I do with all my newly bought (used) Rolexes pretty much straight away. A freshly exposed layer of steel (light polish), couple of new parts inside the movement probably, rubber seals, and my name/watch's serial together in the Rolex system (at least locally). Then its mine.

Not a regular poster here, but this interests me...

I am going to swim against the tide on this one. For some reason or another, I just couldn't get over it. I had a pre-owned JLC Master Control, and I sold it and picked up a new JLC MUT Moon. The Master Control had a small little scratch on it that was put into it by the previous owner, and it really bothered me.

I know it is stupid, I know it is irrational, but it just never really felt like mine. With my MUT Moon, I remember every scuff, scratch, etc. Watches are a surprisingly emotional purchase. Mine has been with me through everything. It has seen everything I have seen. It probably knows more about me than anyone else.

Completely agree with this. have had a few second hand Rolexes from ADs / reputable dealers and just couldn't get over the little scratches, the tatty papers, someone else's name on the warranty.

For the money (and second hand prices are not that far below new prices on SS professional models) I'd rather buy new in stickers.

Couldn't be happier with my new Sub Date C - partly becasue it is a great watch, but also because I know it has only ever been on my wrist, and any marks on it are mine.

This approach does seriously limit my options for future purchases though!

If you're feeling weird about preowned, maybe flip for a new one in your name.

After I've taken the bracelet off, thoroughly cleaned the entire watch, sized the bracelet and put it all back together again. Then it's mine.

I think this is a really good question. I haven't bought 2nd hand and my worries about it not feeling right are the main reason.

Another vote for day 1, as long as it's the day you pay in full.

I don't believe in Chi, Feng Shui or residual Karma.

Seems like you got second hand Rolex watch syndrome and watches being quite inanimate objects, its extremely doubtful if it has any energy/vibes except the power reserve in the mainspring when you wind it.Now if you are one of the guys who perhaps live on fantasy island then what ever floats your boat.To me a watch is just a watch no matter bought used or new they are exactly the same and owned by me from the time I pay for them.

EVERYTHING has "energy/vibrations", Padi, if you look closely enough. You should know that, being quite well-versed in RF technologies and, presumably, physics.

At the time of payment. However when I purchased my first Daytona (used), it took a couple of days for it to feel like mine. That is until I put a couple of scratches on it.
