top gears - that was BORING
what was that hatchback episode all about?
who the hell drives hatchbacks? I've never driven a hatchback nor do I ever want to. That was about as interesting as a Fifth gear episode with the fat guy and the skinny guy.

Porsche and Benz. Their popularity doesn't make them any more interesting. Men's socks are also universally enjoyed by billions but I don't want to see 60 minute episode on them.

I'm a top gear fan. I was just disappointed by what I perceived to be a huge letdown of an episode reviewing the hatchbacks of the 80s.

Hatches - love 'em!
Whole family has them. (except me) Thinking about one for the family retirement car as they are so practical.(maybe a Golf GTI) I love the fact that you can just fold the back seats down and load 'em up with stuff you couldn't fit in a sedan. As a lifetime car enthusiast I'm envious of your Porsche & Benz but only the wealthy can afford them here. Your new price is our second-hand price.

Ok. I won't deny the practicality of hatchbacks as well as popularity.
But is that what we want top hear to cover? Don't you guys want them to cover the ridiculous like the new 6 wheel g wagon? Perhaps the new Porsche hybrid? Maybe crash a tesla s?

They do cover a lot of super cars, but also balance it with cars people can actually afford. Believe it or not some people want to see this.

Alright guys I concede my point about hatchbacks lol.
Forgive me if you own a hatchback. I did not enjoy the show this week not only because I'm not fond of hatchbacks but also because they were old hatchbacks and these occupied most of the episode. Maybe many of you feel differently. In the past when they covered beat up old cars I thought the episodes were entertaining so I'm not sure why I didn't enjoy this one. Perhaps I was hoping for coverage of the newest supercars which had materialized during the hiatus. Hopefully next week will be better with the p1. P.S. 911 is a hatchback? Really?

Isn't a targa 911 the only hatch 911? And a cute one it is, come to think of it so was the E-Type!
Nothing beats a hatch for practicality, have owned will own again I suspect.

This thread is hilarious.
So was the 80's hatch episode. It's English humour. OP: dude, they've been making this programme since 1977. There's only so much standard reviewing you can do. It's now an entertainment show, as much about comedy as cars. Hatchbacks have proven quite successful and popular in Europe and elsewhere, globally, over the last several decades. Who drives them? More like, 'who doesn't?' I've owned a Golf GTi and loved it. Went like sh!+ off a shovel. Very practical, too. They use them in rally as well - professionals, who are quite good at driving. It's exciting to watch. Oh, I've owned a Porsche as well, by the way! Nice. And my wife drives an Audi (Estate - it's also got a big flap on the back, like a hatchback, which is very handy). BTW, it's called Top Gear (there can only be one gear at the top). |

Actually I'm actually not particularly happy about Porsches either as little things are always breaking.
I have nothing but good things to say about my experience with Mercedes thus far...

Looking out of the window at work at the car park, 19 of the 25 cars parked there are hatchback.
Having said that, I didn't enjoy the programme as much as I usually do, IIRC, I was the same for the opening show of the last series, but I seemed to enjoy them more and more as the series continued. Great series. I do like to see reviews/tests of super cars that I will only own in my dreams.

Perhaps if you were around 17-18 years old back in the 1980s then perhaps you would understand. And if you had to pay the price of UK fuel now then again perhaps you would understand the hatchback. The hot hatches of yesteryear were in there days quite a fast very good handling small car. Most all American cars of the same era yes they had huge engines and were fast in a straight line, but put them on corners and around the bend that was a different story.
