If your watch was manufactured prior to 2002, it may not have the laser etching.

How old is your SUB, as far as I recollect the LEC Laser Etched coronet became standard issue on all Rollies from 2003 onwards. Sometimes it can be seen at a particular angle and a 10x loupe would definitely help.
Good luck in finding it. |

The etched coronet came in the first series production of the new millenium. (2001). I believe 'P' series onwards. Steve |

It's not easy to see. If your model is after the time period the etching started than you need to blow it up much larger than the picture above, at least twice that size and you do need to come at it from an angle as Jay said, as if your going to land an airplane on the crystal touching down at 6 o'clock. I couldn't see mine with a magnifying glass I had to buy a loupe

The BLUE Sub is probably the easiest Rolex model to spot the etching. If you can't see it even with a 10x loupe, then it's not there.

It's not easy to find...
It's smaller than the head of a pin and the focal point is the back side of the crystal. For example, if you have on your loupe and are scanning with the dial in focus, you will never find it because it is above that and out of focus. The best way is with the 10x loupe, light entering from the side of the crystal, then focus on the SWISS MADE and slowly pull the watch away from you until the crown comes into focus.. Side lighted, and notice everyting else is slighty out of focus..

And if you let the light enter from a small flashlight, lighting with it from the 12 towards the 6 o' clock position, the flashlight will literally make the LEC (Laser Etched Coronet) glow up.

I also was thinking his 16613 did not have the LEC, since it had lug holes in the side.

i have gmt master 1 T series 1996, but when the sapphire crystal was deeply scratch, i ask the AD to change it with the new one. Then now, there is laser etching on its crystal (originally didn't have laser etching). Will it be a problem when i want to sell it a few years later

This watch has the holes in the lugs. Are there models with holes and LEC?

I think it also makes it easier when you try to look for it against certain dials. I can easily see the LEC on my SeaDweller, but I can't find it on my Platty.

My Y series (2003) Submariner Date 16610 has case holes and laser etched crown (LEC) on the crystal, with no S.

Oh CRUD, I didn't realize the vintage of this thread. I was blinded by the pretty 16613 and never looked at the date!

Y serials still has the lugholes. It's late Y that Rolex transitioned to no lugholes. It's also Y serial that starts to have the LEC. at exactly what date does a Y serial gets LEC is unknown except Rolex

A steep lighting angle is absolutely necessary to find the happy little rascal! But once you do, it really jumps out, despite being so tiny. The light needs to be approcaching the viewer's eyes too, no more than 20-30 degrees off I'd say.
I'll bet the Platty's dial makes it darn near impossible to find at all. Does anyone have a pic of a Platty's coronet? That would be cool, as most of the others are taken with watches with dark dials. Jocke? JJ?

I think service replacement crystals that come with LEC have a tiny S along with the coronet.
