I became a Sub owner!
I bought my first ever automatic sport watch in 2005. It was the blue "Bond" Omega Seamaster 300M. I didn't really think about watches again until I saw the Planet Ocean about a decade later. I lusted after that watch for years, and finally purchased the version with the 8500 movement in 2012.
I love pretty much everything about the Planet Ocean 8500 - the in-house movement beautifully visible through the display back, the great detail of the dial, and the fantastic feel of quality. Admittedly, it's a chunky sized piece, especially on my 6.75" wrist. So it wasn't any dissatisfaction with my Planet Ocean that caused me to start looking for the next watch. It was time spent reading watch blogs, forums, and classifieds that did it. I looked longingly at everything from vintage Subs to pre-moon Speedies to Daytonas. I was in no real rush, but simply enjoying the hunt. Last week, I was returning from a business trip in Korea, and stopped at Incheon airport's duty free shop to browse watches. At the Rolex counter, I tried on the SubC No Date. Right away, I knew this was a special watch for me. I wasn't a fan of the maxi case from looking at pictures, but it looked really good in the metal. With the piece on my wrist, I felt Rolex was very successful in giving the Submariner a modern makeover. I didn't want to take it off. I wasn't prepared to buy the Sub right at that moment. The seed had been planted, though. As soon as I got back from the trip, I contacted a local seller of a used SubC ND. We met yesterday, and I traded away the PO. Here's my first wrist shot of the Sub: |

You picked a great watch. Unless you're looking for a truly vintage Sub, the 114060 is as good as it gets. |

Congrats...I love mt 114060. Y'know, I'd love the PO, too, if it wasn't for that huge-arse He valve crown at 10:00.

Looks great!
I echo your thoughts on the bulkiness of the PO. Your 114060 is much "flatter" and timeless. Great switch! |

My wrist is of a similar size, I'm thinking of acquiring a sub, but I wasn't sure if it'd be too big on my wrists since my current watch is 36mm.
Am I being silly? |

Congrats, can't go wrong w/ the SubC. I'm a HUGE fan of both Rolex & Omega and think they complement each other well...I have no doubt you'll eventually add another PO to your collection as their appeal never seems to fade IMO.
My only question is how do you go from a date functioned Omega to a ND Sub? I'm in the camp that absolutely HAS to have a date function, so it's not even a debate for me...but I'm curious how you feel about the change? Did you even consider the SubC-Date? |

I did find myself glancing at the ND a few times to check the date, and then having to pull out my phone. I think it will take some time to get out of the habit. I didn't really consider the SubC Date because I prefer the symmetrical dial and flat crystal. In this case it was form over function for me. |

Understood.
As I said, I can't function w/o a date, so it wasn't a debate for me. But I'll agree that sometimes I laugh at the thought of the Rolex cyclopes. Sometime I think it's absolutely cool in that it's so unique, screams "Rolex History/Heritage" and just a funky/different way to answer the question, "How do we make the date more legible?" Then other times I find myself scratching my head thinking, "Seriously...that's a chunk of crystal just glued onto the face of my watch...how weird is that?!?!" But in the end the pros of the cyclops outweighs the cons for me, and it's more endearing than annoying. But if that's not your cup of tea, I can see how the ND would be a great watch. Cheers! |
