Should I pull the trigger on a Panerai or???
Hey everyone,
I had my heart set on getting myself a 000 or 005...even a 111...or 112 but have had no luck getting one at the AD near me (Please understand that regardless of the cost benefits of getting used...I always like my purchases new and from an AD to be comfortable). They however have none of the models described above (I live in the Toronto area) but only a 113 white faced. I really like it but wanted to get a black one as my first Panerai. They had the 177 and 176...but just didn't like the titanium....felt a little too light ... I like weight with my watches. They showed me their entry level automatic...didn't like the bubble on the date. So they presented a 312 to me. I liked it a lot but wasn't it love with the feel of the 1950s case...I guess I could get use to it..felt bulky but looked amazing. Well price of the 312 is up there $8500 plus tax...in Canada it all ads up!! After taxes...I can get a new white Milgauss which I like as well for almost $3000 less! I currently have a GMTIIC and a SUBCLV. I'm use to the reliability of the Rolex...and haven't had that much experience with the Panerai to feel comfortable at that price level. I LOVE THE WAY THEY LOOK!. I wanted to get a 000 or 005...even 111 to get myself introduced into the brand. so....what to do what to do???? If I were to have it my way...I'd get a 000 or 005..or 111 but they are telling me these models are discontinued. Should I go with what's familiar.....another Rolex....or just go all out and go with the 312?? Any owners out there? How do you like it. If the 510 was out...I would get that but they say they won't get it till September and I'm being impatient lol. Sorry for the long message |

There are some new ones for sale on the forum and on ebay a new 005 can be had for around 5500 I just purchased a BNIB 111 on ebay for $1500 less than I would have paid the local AD.

The 000/005 models are great. If that's what you like I wouldn't settle on something you aren't as excited about. You should reconsider and get one from a trusted seller or start calling AD's to try and find one in stock.

Hold tight for the 000/005/111....Seems like that's what you want, and they are a great. I'm partial to the 005 (unless 111G), but, all are great!
Have you contacted a TRF seller? Either they could ship to Canada or ship to a hotel in the States and you can make a weekend out of it. |

I love yours too!!! Maybe we should make it clear to the OP that this is a pre-H 111 with a stuffed dial...

I have bought more watches than I can count on this forum with no issues whatsoever. Most recently a Panerai. There are plenty of well know reputable sellers on here and I would buy again without hesitation. I would certainly buy here before ever buying on Ebay that is for damn sure.
With that said this isn't your typical forum.. Members look out for one another here. There is a reason there is a who's who section. The only thing you should be concerned with is the enabling that goes on! |

Does anyone know if the 005 or 111 is actually discontinued? I'd go for 312 just so many other options I would want to explore at that price point before I'd make a decision.

AFAIK, they are still in the catalogue. And, you're not alone on the 1950s case. While really attractive, it doesn't fit certain wrists (mine included - 312 was the PAM I first wanted, but I ended up liking the Bettarini case on me more). |

http://www.panerai.com/en/watch-coll...ection/luminor At around USD 8K the price difference between the 312 and 510 is minimal, so not comparable to a 000 / 005 which are closer to USD 5K. The good new is that you had the opportunity to try on a 176 & 312, so you are now sure the 000/005/111/112 will fit you nicely The only remaining question is if you know the main differences between the 000 and 112? The 000 has a "stuffed" dial and sports OP's logo while the 112 has a sandwich dial and has an exhibition caseback. The 005 & 111 are COSC while the 000 and 112 are not. As for sourcing your 000/005/111/112, I understand you completely; I want it NIB and preferably, I'd like to see it in person before I buy it. I had that opportunity to see both my PAMs before purchasing (one from the AD, one used). So my recommendation is you stick to your guns and get the PAM you want - don't settle for something else just for availability's sake. While I don't know exactly where you live, I find it hard to believe that in a city the size of Toronto there's only one Panerai AD*... ?!? What about a grey dealer, then? My local grey dealer had a PAM I wanted to see shipped to him from an AD in another town... *on second thought, there aren't all that many ADs in Canada... you should consider visiting Montreal - home of last year's P-Day... http://www.panerai.com/en/network/au...-CANADA-CANADA

Stick to your original plan. The 312 is nice but i found it sat too high on the wrist given the case shape so sold it.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm going to stick to my guns and wait to see if I can get a 000 005 111 or 112. I'll keep checking my AD and if will call Montreal to see if they have any in stock and are willing to mail and order. I may have to consider a road trip! Thanks everyone I'll keep you posted :)

Don't settle and get a 312.
Either forget your ad to get what you want or go without.

I suggest 111 manual wind, clear case back PAM DNA or if you can carry PAM 372, it is another great choice

Don't get another Rolex. Not if you already have two. Well, not until after you buy a Panerai.

Be patient. A Panerai is a great watch brand. I have had just about every model you have mentioned. I would do the 111 as my first Panerai. 312 is a great watch but it is top heavy and most likely will not grow on you except if you just wear it 1-2 days a week. The 111 is a real classic. You can find one for $5500 or so easy from trusted sellers. You can't go wrong with the Luminor case, sand which dial and expo back. I wil say that I did recently sell my 111 to fund my 372 which is magnificent. It is a bit large but comfy to wear. Since I have a couple of Rolex's and a Radiomir to wear In rotation i can rest the 372 if it starts feeling to big. 510 is available and 111 is still In production. Good luck

If you don't like the case on the 312 forget it. You won't grow into it. The basic four you mentioned are classic pieces. Even if you don't keep it forever it's still a good place to start.
There must be AD's in CAN who will ship to you - call a few, is my free advice. Good luck! |
