My first watch EVER!!

So for my wife's 30th birthday she wanted a vintage rolex lady datejust. I have never owned a watch and thought spending that kind of money on a watch was crazy and stupid. I have never worn a watch and never really thought they were comfortable to wear.
But I knew that if I got her anything different for her big 3 0, she would have felt let down. So the research began. I am not a wing it type of guy. If I am going to spend a lot of money on smoothing, I'm going to research the hell out of it and then look for the best possible deal. What I didn't realize was that this was going to be the beginning of a new addiction for me.
I started to learn a lot about watches, watch companies, vintage vs. new, mechanical vs. self winding, etc. I was fascinated by the craftsmanship and the technology that went into a well made and well designed watch. I had never looked at a watch like that before. I just thought a watch kept time and was uncomfortable to wear. I never thought about them as being an advance piece of machinery.
After a couple months, I found a vintage rolex online for my wife that was from the same year she was born. She loved it and loved the symbolism of having a vintage watch that she loved and was about the same age as her.
Once she had her watch, my enjoyment for learning about watches and seeing what I would like in a watch didn't stop. I continued my quest into a world that I had never once considered. I finally narrowed my search down to a couple watches and it was my goal to find the best deal.
This past weekend I purchased my dream watch and it was one of the greatest days I can remember. Just having the watch on my wrist made me so happy. Knowing the technology, craftsmanship and standard that went into making such a device makes it even more special.
My Rolex GMT Master II Ref. 116710LN is a beaut! I don't ever want to take it off, and the addiction to fine time pieces now lives inside me. I hope to have this watch my entire life and maybe even pass it down to a son one day. Thanks for reading my story. I hope to participate a lot more on these threads.

Does anyone have a good story about how they first got the itch in fine watches?

P.S: I'm a lefty

Congratulations! You know your doomed like the rest of here, right? Once the WIS bug hits you can never recover but then again, who wants to?

Beautiful watch, congratulations!!
I also never even owned a watch until I bought my first Rolex (16710 Pepsi) about a year ago. My father bought a President Day Date in the 80's and as a boy I knew that it was very special to him.
The first time I saw a watch and thought I have to have one was about 15 years ago when I noticed an acquaintance that I saw once a year sporting a GMT Pepsi. Every time I saw him I would try to steal glimpses of the beautiful stainless steel watch. Last year at the event I told him I how I has always admired his watch and then I showed him mine. He was very gracious and told me how his father had given him the watch. Next year I would love to get a picture of my watch with his. I hope he will not think I am a weirdo, he is not a WIS. I however have the disease and I can't wait to start growing my humble collection.

Way back in the day, when I knew next to nothing about fine watches, the GMT was always my favorite Rolex. I still covet one. Enjoy !

Welcome to the Forum.

Excellent first choice.

Be very afraid - this place is crammed full of enablers.

Now you really need a matching TT.
