In the last two years I've gone thru maybe 10 modern Rolexes, and in the beginning I was overwhelmed by the new ceramic bezel and all the new features the modern Rolex watches brought a few years ago. But lately I've got bored of all that new and "better" stuff. Now I'm pretty much seeking for some vintage watches and other brands as well. That's just me and to each their own, but has anyone felt the same maybe?

I'm not sure they are upgrades. They are changes thats for sure.

"Upgrades" is loaded language. Most of the changes are cosmetic, and some are really questionable (e.g. branding engraved all the way around the rehaut). Functionally the new watches are basically identical to the ones made 30 years ago; comparisons to Model Ts are hyperbolic.

The new lume is definitely better, though. Tritium paint fizzles out and dies, rendering your not-that-old watch useless in the dark; I'm very glad they got rid of that stuff. I also like the bigger hour and minute hands for the same reason.

Never was excited by any of the new upgrades personally. I have yet to see a new Sea Dweller in the flesh however.

The vintage have a place, but I can't pretend the upgrades aren't upgrades. It's like owning a Model T versus and modern car. Both cool, but the upgrades....

I tend towards the new, more modern stuff though there are a couple of exceptions.

I really want to acquire some examples of the previous gen GMTs, and I also like the older Subs. In fact, I'm giving my just serviced and polished 16610 to my son for college graduation and I'm trying to decide whether to replace it with a SubLVC or simply replacing it with another 16610.

Right now I'm leaning towards the LVC. Then I'll will be on to the older GMTs. Of course, I can get most of my GMT fix with one watch and a few bezels.

Well in the real world they are, the clasp could prove to be a improvement and if the thin sliver of ceramic was DIY interchangeable. And if it was around the same price as the aluminum inserts, then again it could prove to be a improvement over the perfectly functionality and changeability of the old insert.

I like the newer models and the vintage one's as well. I guess I'm fickle! Oh, I almost forgot, I like ANYTHING Rolex has produced. I drank the kool-aid but I don't care........

Agree with the OP. Ceramic models lack character, IMO, with each one I see looking the same as the last. Whereas older models each look slightly different.

That's a good point. With vintage, you get variations from lume aging, bezel fading, etc. As far as I can see, the newer generation models will never show their age, i.e. their character.

I have four-digit, five-digit and six-digit models. I love them all for different reasons.

I am not a fan of the ceramic bezels. I think they look like plastic. I prefer the metal Sea-Dweller and Submariner bezels.

My first Rolex was a GMT Master II Pepsi circa 2001, certainly not 'old' but having just gotten the GMT BLNR, it just feels like a whole different league. I mean the bracelet alone is so buttery and solid, clasping it when I put it on is an OCCASION. That said, the older GMT allowed me to have two different looks as I could swap for an all black bezel and have a cool Submariner look with a splash of red on the dial. A single red 1680 is definitely on my short list, tried a beautiful one on today and I was really special, even on a beaten up jangly bracelet. I think I'll put my future vintage pieces on leathers and natos and leave the steel bracelets for the new class. But that's just like...my opinion man...
