Official Rolex Service Center... can't fix my watch?!?

I was given a Rolex Gmt Master a few months ago that was running sporadically (watch had no damage, was just sitting around for a long time). I took it in to Mayor's and they sent it to NYC to be serviced at the official Rolex Service Center -- they now say that they received a letter from Rolex stating they can't fix my watch and I need to pay another $150 to send it elsewhere (just to have it looked at)... just wondering if this makes sense? Has this happened to anyone else? Does Rolex have official repair facilities that do repairs different from a service center?

Can you elaborate? Did they state why they couldn't fix it? If it's old they stop working on models after a certain age.

I will find out what they said is wrong with it and update, thx for the help. The watch is a 1961 "Pepsi" Bezel GMT Master, so I don't think it's due to the age. It' is genuine, just had it appraised and I have the original Swiss Chronometer papers supplied by Rolex for it.

Send it to Rik Dietel at Timecare Inc. .com. He is in Florida like you and has a Rolex parts account and can service your watch for a very fair price and quick turnaround. He can and will service older and vintage timepieces. His work is awesome.

1961 is getting towards the age when RSC could decline a service. I'd get it back and send it to an independent.

First off, get it back from Mayors. They are only acting as a middleman and will
only confuse the issue and probably mark up the cost of any service that is ultimately
done. Then, follow the advice of others here and send to an independent who services
vintage watches.

Actually you probably lucked out that Rolex didn't work on it if it's an original vintage
GMT. Rolex factory service would replace any old parts (like original dials and hands), thereby
ruining any collectible value. You're better off preserving any original dial/bezel/hands.

Get it back in your hands *soonest* and then proceed from there.
