which submariner w/date should i buy??
all,
recently my rolex GMT yr2000 was stolen from our home - i have a $5000 budget and looks like i will be purchasing a used submariner w/date w/box/papers as a replacement. i like the retro 1984-1999 models but is there an advantage or better update on the later yr 2000+ watches? which model is most desirable? thanks in advance |

You can get a 14060 Sub (without date) for that money very easily...with box and papers. The 14060M came out in the early 2000s, if you want the movement upgrade, but it's not a deal maker for me. If you want a date, look for the 16610. This also falls within your budget, in good condition with b&p if you are lucky.

Sorry to hear about your GMT getting stolen. Welcome to TRF. I would suggest finding a used Rolex dealer that has a brick and mortar store. That way you can try on different models and years. Why aren't you getting another GMT?

Throw in a few more bucks and grab a V or M serial 16610, IMO.
Sorry to hear about the robbery.

My favourite are the ones made ~ 2000-2002 in the P, K, and Y serial number range. They're new enough that they can be found in near perfect condition with no bracelet wear, have sapphire crystals, working luminous material and solid end link bracelets....but still have the lug-holes which are one of my favourite features in any tool/sports watch. I now have a P serial GMT-Master II, a Y serial Sub-Date, and now I'm on the lookout for an Explorer II with the same features.

This is what I would do myself assuming you prefer a 16610 of course for similar money you quite possibly would be able to have a 116610... 6.5k range

My thought is to take a look at the ceramic Subs before you buy anything. All the upgrades are wonderful, and worth the extra $-- IMHO. Sorry to read about your GMT. Welcome to TRF! |

Agree with this. Check out the sales forum. Some new model pre-owned subs for sale.
Disregard: I missed that you already bought one. Congrats, a real beauty. |

The sad thing is that $5K won't buy you another GMT. They seem to be pretty popular as of late, and selling for a pretty penny.
You can definitely find a 16610 for $5K, but it won't be a newer M or V serial. |

thanks again everyone. you can't believe how freakin furious i am that someone broke into our home - i only wish i could have 5 minutes with them in a room and a baseball bat in my hand - also a rag so i can wipe their bloody brain matter off my face.
**lesson to be learned - make sure you have proper homeowners insurance to cover the "total" replacement cost of your rolex and jewelry. fortunately i took photos of our watches/jewelry but our policy had only a $5000 limit per item. i didn't realize this when i started our policy - i couldn't replace my GMT for that amount so i went with the sub. **make sure you get appraisals and proper full coverage. **also make sure you have deadbolts on all of your doors - the pond scum that broke into our home jimmied the front door of our victorian home - it now has an age appropriate deadbolt which we came to find out was always part of the door handle system just not functional. did i mention they also stole my wife's car? it was found 5 days later out of gas with needles/used alcohol pads on the floor and stuffed with other peoples stolen property - what deadbeat drug addicted losers allstate has been more than wonderful in their handling of our claim - i'm happy to have a submariner on my wrist and considering my wife and kids were home asleep at the time of the theft(i was on a plane to SF), things could have been much worse. here are some crappy iphone pictures of my new to me sub: |
