Rolex magazine issue 2

Anyone got issue 2 yet?

My AD sent me one today. Interesting article on Winston Churchill and letters between him and Hans Wilsdorf regarding his Rolex.

Didn't know that Churchill was given such a special gift

Yep, Wilsdorf was a major Anglophile.

Led to the Air-King and related "Air" series of watches, I believe.

I think that Wilsdorf actually set up in the UK originally under another name with his brother in law and during WW1 the govt taxed watch parts extremely high and that's what made him move to Switzerland. He registered the name Rolex and then set it up. Something like that from memory. Worth reading up on the history :-)

Picked one up at the Rolex Boutique in Chicago on N. Michigan Ave. Seemed to have a few more on the counter to pick up. If you are in Chicago call ahead if you want one.
ps. Its a Tourneau store

The Tudor brand and its Tudor rose was a nod to the Monarchy, too. Read 'The Best of Time: Rolex Wristwatches' by Dowling & Hess for a detailed history, or check out the relevant bits of Jake's Rolex blog.
